🌿 Excited to share our latest preprint! We tracked how plasmodesmata numbers evolved across the path from C₃ → C₄ photosynthesis in Flaveria - and found a stepwise increase in cell-to-cell connectivity. Thoughts or feedback are most welcome 😊 #PlantScience

Great to work with Bruhn et al. on an article on RQ's (i.e. respiratory CO2 efflux:O2 uptake ratio) in plants. Typically we assume the fluxes to be in balance, but in many cases, they are not, with implications for C modeling. @pplplantarum.bsky.social onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Happy Earth Day Mother Earth 🌍! Our gift to you is 430 ppm of CO2. If you would like it to be warmer I am sure we can deliver next year

Last one for Tax Day – NOAA 🌊 The average U.S. taxpayer contributes $21/year to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. 💡 NOAA turns science into safety — for coasts, communities, & the climate. It helps safeguard lives, property, and ecosystems from rising seas and extreme weather.

Our study is based on the finding that leaf air spaces aren't always saturated with water vapour, especially under high VPD conditions. This might dramatically impact how aquaporins regulate both water and CO2 transport in plants. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

On this celebratory day of women and girls in science, let’s reflect that the US National Science Foundation has put the words “women” and “female” (but not “men” and “male”) on the list of forbidden words that will get your grant slated for the reject bin.

My daughter once said “I love fantastic things!”. Well, so do I! Curiosity for fantastic things is what moves the world forward. Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science!

Science does not move forward without the invaluable contributions of women. Today we celebrate the incredible women on the RIPE team and all of those shaping the future of research. #EveryVoiceInScience @cavycavs.bsky.social @meganlmatthews.bsky.social @lancasteruni.bsky.social

Early career scientist looking to move abroad to the UK for a couple years should look into this excellent opportunity. Deadline is 18 March. 🧪 I'm happy to help develop projects with photosynthesis researchers to come to Lancaster University. Contact me directly, if interested.

The most iconic figure in the environmental sciences is the Keeling Curve, the CO₂ record from Mauna Loa, Hawaii. @noaa.gov had a wonderful site where you could visualize and download these data, and now it's just gone. These data belong to us and we should not let this happen!

Are you a non-UK scientist interested in working in the UK for a postdoc? A Royal Society Newton Fellowship could be just what you are looking for! We can support applicants interested in working on photosynthetic responses to climate change. Please get in touch! royalsociety.org/grants/newto...

Genetic rescue has been touted as a conservation tool to revive endangered populations. A remaining question is how long the benefits of can persist in a wild population? We compiled 40 years of data on Florida panthers to get at that question. 🧪🌍🦤🧬 #consgen #conservation #wildlife rdcu.be/d77GL

📢🌶️🌿Tech-savvy with expertise in agriculture or horticulture? This is your chance to make an impact! Join Western Sydney Uni’s APPN team as Senior Technical Officer and support world-leading research in plant phenotyping across state-of-the-art facilities. Closing 8.30pm, 16 Feb. tinyurl.com/47nezhnm

New paper alert: ‘eddy covariance measurements in an agave plantation’ - key findings: (1) Plant productivity was due to day- and nighttime CO2 uptake, (2) soil dryness causes switch to CAM pathway, (3) photosynthetic plasticity controls ecosystem CO2 exchange. doi.org/10.1016/j.ag...

www.nature.com/articles/s41... They "identified many highly conserved positions that tolerate mutation and rare mutations that improve CO2 affinity. These data indicate that non-trivial biochemical changes are readily accessible" #PlantScience

Congratulations to the team led by @alissarcheaib.bsky.social on their new paper in Ecology Letters on soil nitrogen and leaf nitrogen demand. Our blog will be out next week but you can check out the full paper here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... @nickgregsmith.bsky.social

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... New meta-analysis on plant thermal acclimation in @globalchangebio.bsky.social, led by Ting Wu. Some patterns emerged, but a small # of studies + a large range of methods = it's still hard to draw conclusions. More, and standardized experiments are needed.

**COMMUNITY FEEDBACK REQUIRED** We're going to run some workshops for early career researchers at a #plantscience meeting later this year. If you're an ECR, what topics would you like to see covered? What would be the most useful things to hear about for you? Reply here... 🧪 🌳 🌱 (please share)

One more day to finish that #EGU25 abstract and submit tomorrow to @egubg.bsky.social

Some physiological processes that can be neglected when measuring gas exchange in happy plants become important when dealing with stressed plants. In this paper we outline the things that might cause trouble under suboptimal conditions. Shout out to the new journal @plantecophys.bsky.social !

🧪 Still looking for PhD candidates interested in water fluxes over grasslands and croplands 😉

Just a few more days left to submit your abstract for EGU! If you are working with isotopes (ecosystems, atmosphere, plants, biogeochemical cycles, and more!), consider submitting to our session.
