New study finds that when a listener tunes out during in-person, but not video-call self-disclosure, the speaker’s physiological arousal spikes, signaling stress or social discomfort. With fewer social cues, speakers may be more tolerant of distracted listeners in virtual spaces.

Simply restricting kids online might seem like the easiest solution—but real safety comes from open conversations. Thanks to Katya Hertog for this important reminder! Parenting in the digital age isn’t about just saying ‘no’. It's about listening, learning, and supporting. #DigitalParenting

This #SaferInternetDay, we asked members of the OII research community what they believe is "too good to be true" about life online. Associate Professor, Dr Katya Hertog @katyahe.bsky.social, @oii.ox.ac.uk shares her thoughts on parental control technologies. Find out more: bit.ly/41dW1WE

Neat piece from the Guardian. As a full-time working parent, sounds familiar! It's gotten better as the kids are older, but I remember those days. I still at times feel I can't do either job—parent or professional—as well as I'd like. Challenge is the mountain of pressure we pile onto ourselves.

Wonderful summary in Forbes of our recent qualitative study: "Researchers found that lone wolves have a mindset that values the benefits of solitude and its potential for self-expansion. They view it as a state of infinite, inherently rewarding possibilities." www.forbes.com/sites/traver...

What does prejudice have in common with smoking? More than we might think! Since MI and SDT have great ideas on how to tackle unhealthy behaviors, we might learn something about attitude change by recognizing the similarities. Nikki Legate and I explored this in Perspectives. doi.org/10.17605/OSF...

Hurrah for industry supporting open science practices. Good going, Meta!

The Center for Open Science and Meta are partnering on a pilot project to share social media data related to well-being for academic research. We hope that this will provide a model for industry-academia partnerships to increase access of important data. www.cos.io/about/news/m...

You saw the headline, now look at what happened when scientists actually evaluate the headline

Cutest psych study of the year award goes to Skinner's learning principles applied to rat selfies. Makes me think we should all be taking more selfies. Clearly these rats know how to have a good time... www.nytimes.com/2024/01/23/s...

Interesting UKRI-commissioned study finds that we need to improve research culture by building “environments where all individuals are free to be themselves… feel well supported and confident to express their views.” www.ukri.org/publications...

Cool article! "Ten years ago, @simine.com was perceived as a radical in her advocacy for reforms to increase transparency and [the] credibility of research,” says Brian Nosek… “She is no longer seen as a radical. But she hasn’t changed a bit.” www.economist.com/science-and-...

The Journal of Personality has a position open for a new Associate Editor. It comes with a small stipend and a lovely, supportive Editor in Chief. DM me if you are interested and I can tell you more about it!

Interesting article! Parents “spending time on themselves — on relaxation and self-care — and not so much on housework, was associated with positive outcomes for children.” Taking time time ‘for ourselves’ can help us to be more patient and present when we are with our kids. hbr.org/2018/11/how-...

Given the risk of unintentionally plagiarising other people's works by using LLMs, you should err on the side of caution by citing me.

Great to see that Collabra, one of our best value-congruent journals for psych. research, is offering streamlined review. Perfect for carefully conducted studies with mixed / unexpected - but still informative - results!

Reminder that Collabra:Psychology offers streamlined review - send us your rejected paper with reviews addressed!

Academia is permeated by beliefs that your accomplishments are based on "merit." There's glorification of over-work without attention to structural & institutional contexts in which people "produce." I'm aiming to be more mindful this year of setting boundaries and not falling into the "over" trap.

Nice reminder in @nytimes.com to seek out quality social connection when we feel lonely, including by listening! That said, I think feeling lonely is also an opportunity to connect with the self :) We can embrace our solitude AND connect with others. www.nytimes.com/2023/12/18/w... #positivesolitude

New preprint: When and How to Deviate from a Preregistration osf.io/preprints/ps... I hope this helps researchers to reflect on the consequence of deviations from preregistrations by evaluating the test's severity and the validity of the inference.

Heads-up: APA is seeking a new Open Science and Methodology Chair. Open science folks, please consider nominating yourself! www.apa.org/pubs/journal...

Wonderful to see this work is out, come for the excellent @matti.vuorre.com visualisations, stay for the science of solitude!
