When you describe the actual agenda of the Republican Party to ordinary people—like this kind of comical reverse Robin Hoodism—time & time again researchers find that they simply will not believe you. They cannot fathom anyone could be this cartoonishly evil.

NDPR has posted Andrew Lister's insightful review of my book, "Public Reason and Political Autonomy" (Routledge, 2022). #philsky #philosophy #poltheory #polphil

Sunrise over Lake Michigan and Grant Park. (Chicago - 23 February 2025.)

There was a time in my life when I did not know that J.G.A. Pocock wrote an unpublished essay about Tom Bombadil, but that time is now over. arts.st-andrews.ac.uk/intellectual...

Minnesota is now South Manitoba. I don't make the rules.

Post-game feeling...

Yes!!! McDavid ends it.🇨🇦🥅🏒

How strange it is to be alive when the USA jumped the shark.

Thank god someone around here has a clear-eyed view of the stakes

Interesting piece by T Piketty on DJT’s “national capitalism” and how Europe should respond.

An apology to John Rawls. I couldn’t really understand why he was so obsessed with the importance of stability as a political value. But now I do.

I'm not some kind of whipper-snapper marketing genius politico, but if I'm trying to distance myself from accusations of being "Trump-lite," I wouldn't use Trump's signature slogan and just swap out Canada for America. #CanadaFirst #CanadaLast #CdnPoli

Hmm...

A great "big picture" analysis of what is happening in the US from political philosopher Joe Heath. (Which supports & clarifies my conviction that parliamentary democracy, despite its faults, is by far the best resolution of the problems generated by the "division of powers" yet developed.)

Spot on.

Two fucking bandits. One of them has unleashed horrific violence against the people of Ukraine. The other is our next door neighbour threatening our sovereignty. But we know exactly who this grifter is. We don't bend. We don't break. We remain #strongasfuck True. North. Strong. Free.

When he starts calling PM Carney Governor Carney it’ll actually be pretty funny.

A depressing but helpful overview. “America is on the cusp of competitive authoritarianism. … In 2025, the United States is governed nationally by a party with greater will and power to exploit constitutional and legal ambiguities for authoritarian ends than at any time in the past two centuries.”

“The richest man in the world, Elon Musk, is stealing money from you to put in his pocket” has to be the easiest political argument ever www.nytimes.com/2025/02/12/u...

"The purpose of the state is really freedom" Spinoza, TTP. So it is no surprise that as the state gets dismantled, our medical, gender etc freedoms are under attack. For Spinoza, a good government guaranteed security and safety, and the ability to collaborate for its citizens.

Silver linings — DJT’s tariff threats are achieving a couple of valuable things for Canada: 1. Boosting national unity; 2.Undermining the Tories’ chances in the next election.

You trained AI for $50 billion? Makes tuition fees look reasonable, and there you get the real thing, not an artificial version.

One of the (many) things I loathe about AI is the need to figure out how to disable or remove the infuriatingly annoying AI widgets that have started infecting many of the tools I have to use (email accounts, document readers, browsers, etc.) This garbage should be "opt in" not "opt out." *grumble*

AI hype is poisoning academia, it's undermining learning, it's making research harder, it's corrupting knowledge, it's eroding scholarly norms, and it's monopolising funding & opportunities. It's a shame those with the power to change this aren't committed to valuing universities in the right way.

Turns out the actual purse as in “the power of the purse” is located in an obscure office in the Dept of Treasury. Musk broke in and stole it.

All this chaos, stress, and abuse — just so that Canada will do what it already was doing, but now with a “fentanyl czar” involved. Apparently the addition of a “czar” was the key to everything. “Czars” are magical people. Truly, the gods themselves would struggle with such stupidity.

I think countries around the world should levy tariffs specifically on Tesla in response to US tariffs, as well as banning Twitter as a national security threat driving a wedge between our co-dictators may be the most effective thing they can do

"[W]hat Trump is doing to Canada is highly likely to cause America’s standing in the world to enter long-term decline. [...] If the United States will betray even Canada, there is no one it would not betray. That perception, if it becomes widespread, spells the end of American power as we know it"

A year ago today, I moved from Canada to Finland. At the time, several of my family members expressed concern about my relocation because Finland shares a border with a country whose leader is bent on territorial expansion. Thinking about this for no particular reason today.

I'm starting to think it was a mistake to no longer require every 15 year old to memorize four Shakespeare plays about kings gone mad

Current mood. (Rohan = 🇨🇦, of course. But the comparison is rather unfair to Saruman. Whatever his faults, Saruman was not an ignoramus.)

Canada. True. North. Strong. Free. #strongasfuck

Never let an American crow about overthrowing a tyrannical monarch ever again.

Signed. 🇨🇦

Did I actually refer to Elon Musk's legendary Telsa as a "douche panzer"? And at the parliament of Canada's press gallery? I wonder how that term slipped out. But yes, I'd hammer him with tariffs. I don't like fascists. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vyR...

Farewell North America. It was nice while it lasted.

An insightful review of "Politicizing Political Liberalism" by A Nuti & G Badano -- the best book on political liberalism in recent years, and one that is acutely relevant to the world of 2025. #philsky #philosophy #poltheory
