Question to the #neurobiology #evolution community: Can anyone point me to literature on the divergence in excitatory #neurotransmitter use between invertebrates and vertebrates? Specifically how insects got to mainly use acetylcholine and vertebrates glutamate? Thanks!

The first PinkyCaMP plasmids are now available on Addgene🧬… more coming soon 🚀! Stay tuned! www.addgene.org/Olivia_Masse...

🎥 Big Announcement! On Feb 5th at 13:00 CET, we kick off the 1st edition of our UNDERSTANDING BEHAVIOUR live workshop experience ! 🧠 Emma Robinson will dive into modelling depression-like behaviours in rodents, from assay limitations to innovative approaches. #Neuroscience #BehavioralResearch

I’m thrilled to share our preprint presenting MORSE: a new way to simultaneously & quantitatively track patterns of neuromodulators/neuropeptides in vitro & in vivo using spatially multiplexed 3D imaging of 10+ green optical sensors on a microendoscope biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2025.01.26.634931v1

As someone who has reported on AI for 7 years and covered China tech as well, I think the biggest lesson to be drawn from DeepSeek is the huge cracks it illustrates with the current dominant paradigm of AI development. A long thread. 1/

True. And a good, if a bit shallow article 👇 I challenge you (and me) to read and finish a long book 🤓

Very much looking forward to FRM in Oslo this year, many exciting symposia have been accepted including @mattneuro.bsky.social on voltage imaging,as well as my symposium on hypothalamic behavior control 💙 Now I'm 🤞🤞 🤞 that speakers invited from the US will be able to join us ❗

Times are depressing rn. Remember to take breaks. If a book can give you a break and you read German, I have a suggestion 👇

My lab has a tradition that each week one person contributes edits to a Wikipedia page relevant to their scientific work, and then presents it briefly at lab meeting (and we clap). A few of my favorites: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proprio... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chionea en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Femoral...

One more inspiring individual just joined us here on Bsky. Her mission, “Science that serves humanity.” Give this Columbia neuroscientist & Professor a follow!

New paper from the @KononenkoLab! Happy to be part of this great work showing that less sugar is better your motor control, and autophagy makes sure you keep rocking on low sugar 😉 from molecules to behavior: tour de force!!!! www.nature.com/articles/s42...

Apply now! If you’re looking to supercharge your experimental neuroscience skills and create unforgettable experiences, this summer school is a truly unique opportunity you don’t want to miss!

Enjoying interviewing folks for these positions-- if you're thinking about a postdoc and would like to chat, do reach out!

Excited to share a new tool from the Ross Lab @rossenator.bsky.social @einsteinmededu.bsky.social for estrus staging in mice. Honored to be part of this innovative work!

One thing I’ve noticed: academic men often form alliances that extend beyond work. They reward shared activities and have a tendency to bond with similar others (homophily) —women do this too but evidence shows they give out fewer professional rewards to friends. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

'Medicine tends to trivialize conditions it lacks the tools to explain.' Very insightful piece on the tremendous burden of chronic pain and the transformative potential of pain research.

Looking to level up your neuroscience teaching? 🧠✨The figures from Introduction to Behavioral Neuroscience are awesome and are freely available @introtobn.bsky.social. I am using these for graduate level class in veterinary neuroscience. openstax.org/details/book...

This is an interesting and provocative new paper by DiFrisco and Gawne that critiques the agential stance in evolution in good faith. Both authors are incisive thinkers, and we should take their considerations to heart. That said, I do have some unstructured thoughts I will list below.

New year new work from the lab! We explore whether aggression experience and observation lead to similar changes in future aggression strategy. (They do!) We perform 2-color imaging across the whole social behavior network across time and track changes www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

I’m excited to share my latest paper @cp-cellmetabolism.bsky.social. HakanK and I recorded from AgRP neurons continuously for 1 month and found some exciting things during ad lib feeding, fasting and on circadian timescales www.cell.com/cell-metabol....

If you've never donated to Wikipedia, now's the time. Elon Musk is attacking it because it's one of the only sources of honest, curated information that he can't control. www.newsweek.com/elon-musk-ta...

Not an overstatement to say Wikipedia is the greatest achievement in information ever. It's also the backbone of the internet. Google doesn't work without it, for instance. It's kind of the last, best thing really working for humans on the shared knowledge front. Can't let him mess with this.
