there's a guy on our local Nextdoor that just comments "I know that guy, he's my web designer" on every photo of a spider that gets posted. he is the only person using social media correctly

Why is MySpace Tom's story so appealing? It might because his time as a social media founder made him a millionaire, not a billionaire, and chose to stop: Instead of trying to take over the world and profit off toxicity, Tom is content to live off his cash on his own terms.

We’re seeking a Staff Researcher for our Local Lab. ✨ You’ll drive strategic research initiatives while leading tactical studies to refine and evaluate our approach while collaborating closely with your product colleagues.

In the age of smart phones and social media, how can neighborhoods and towns bring people together and create positive outcomes for children? Author Seth Kaplan argues that a variety of factors, including urban planning, local government, religious institutions, and schools make a real difference.

If you had to do one pushup for every minute spent on TikTok or Instagram, would you spend less time online, or get really good at pushups? The ClearSpace app is betting on the former.

I need to find more shitposters and fun people on Bluesky, any suggestions?

New_ Public Co-Director @eli.bsky.social was invited to address Catholic leaders from around the world at the Vatican. Some of the strongest responses to his speech were *not* from Westerners: newpublic.substack.com/p/what-eli-s...

When we move to a new platform, are we doomed to just carry over our norms and behaviors from a previous platform? @ryanhatesthis.bsky.social on the chaos @maddow.msnbc.com is stirring up by bringing her boomer audience over from Facebook to Bluesky. www.garbageday.email/p/bluesky-s-...

Here’s the full text of @eli.bsky.social ’s speech at the Vatican. It may be a long read, but it will leave you with hope, insights, and questions for the future of social media.

RESEARCH: Your recent emotional meltdown could really have been caused by too much scrolling. In an informative and entertaining video, @rebeccawatson.bsky.social sums up a new paper that finds an association between frequent social media posting and “greater irritability.”

Keep an eye on this one, via @caseynewton.bsky.social: The open-sourcing of trust and safety tools has serious potential — there's an analogue to the open-sourcing of cybersecurity in the 1980s and 90s

@eli.bsky.social: “I think we need to think beyond the commercial platforms and start thinking about, how do we build community in other ways online and in ways that foreground civic virtue rather than just commerce?”

“Americans are losing faith in democracy and authoritarianism is stepping into the gap.” Full stop. In December 2023, Democracy 2076 invited participants from all over the U.S. to propose amendments to the Constitution that would help ensure a thriving future for our country.

Nobel Laureate Maria Ressa: "These platforms are not neutral technologies, they're sophisticated systems designed to exploit our deepest psychological vulnerabilities. They monetize our outrage and hate...and systematically erode our capacity for nuanced thinking, our capacity for empathy."

RESEARCH: Some social media algorithms have the power to reduce political hostility. A custom browser extension re-ranked polarizing political content on participants’ feeds. By the end, people with less exposure were warmer to political outgroups and vice versa!

Severance isn’t just a great metaphor for work/life balance — it’s uncannily like the separation between our lives online (profiting corporations, unaware of how it actually works, etc.) and offline. Doesn’t looking up from your phone feel like stepping off that elevator at Lumon? (No spoilers!)

Join the conversation about fact-checking social media: “False and incendiary information on platforms causes real world harm.” “I believe the social media should be held accountable, but the problem is the audience, not the tool.” Add your thoughts: psi.newpublic.org/np/question/...

As New_ Public Co-Director @eli.bsky.social said at his speech at the Vatican, “moderator” as a label just doesn’t cut it for us. At their best, these leaders do so much more than police speech. Would you call a librarian a “shh-er”?

Daniel Stid's hypotheses on the "green shoots of promise and pluralism in many communities across the country" include: 🫧 The renewal of our civic culture will probably bubble up from local communities

Great comments from @eli.bsky.social on creating online spaces that elevate positive content, not polarization. Last week, the Vatican warned that deepfakes and AI-driven misinformation erode trust and fuel division. Ethical AI must reinforce truth and social cohesion—not deepen polarization.

Colorado PBS reporter Chase McCleary digs into how local Facebook Groups are filling a void as traditional local journalism disappears. 😑

Recommended reading! From 2023 but increasingly relevant now as people leave Meta & X for more ethical social media. Great primer to understanding what Bluesky really is & will prob help you understand all the apps like @newpublic.substack.com, @pinksky.app, @flashesapp.bsky.social & whatever else!

Bumping this foundational piece by New_ Public’s very own @sammy.bsky.social. A great read for anyone getting up to speed on decentralized social media.

Zuck passes the buck on fact-checking in favor of crowd-sourced Community Notes. So now the question is: Can the people be trusted to fact-check themselves? The answers are … more complicated than you might think.

Back in 2016, @scripting.com saw this common technology pattern coming for social media: “At first there's a wonderful burst of creativity and then it's locked down by a few big companies.” But what if social media was more like Central Park? scripting.com/2016/06/18/1...

In the last year we’ve learned a ton about local digital spaces: groups where neighbors come together and gather digitally. Thoughtful and intentional design and leadership can make a huge difference between groups that are toxic and chaotic, and those that are prosocial and public-spirited.

Great to see Eli Pariser was at the Vatican. Interesting venue for such an important point of view. youtu.be/Ur3rUWX0zSM?... @newpublic.substack.com

In a surprising turn of events for an agnostic Jew from Maine, earlier this week I found myself at the Vatican, face to face with Pope Francis. What was especially inspiring is that we have a startling amount in common when it comes to our hopes and ideas for the future of the internet. 🧵

Excited to announce that as of Feb 1 I'll be starting as a fellow at the Applied Social Media Lab at @harvard.edu's Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, working on @blacksky.app. Much appreciation to @jbellack.bsky.social for his support and belief in what we're building with Blacksky.

“To think that we have, as a society, allowed this handful of men to make the decisions of how our social lives are governed … just feels completely absurd, and really sad.” New_ Public Co-Director Deepti Doshi dives into #FreeOurFeeds with @granthermes.bsky.social of Make it Make Sense
