Tom Alston, seen here on his only regular issue MLB card (1955 Bowman), was the first black player on the St. Louis Cardinals. A promising prospect, his career was cut short due to serious mental health issues that unfortunately plagued him for most of his life. sabr.org/bioproj/pers...

Before his solid 12 year MLB career, I saw Kevin Millar as a 21 year old pro baseball rookie on the 1993 Northern League Champion St. Paul Saints. I don't think any of us knew that he'd someday spend over a decade in the majors & win a World Series ring. Here he is on his Portland minor league card.

Ruben Sierra had a really solid career. Over 2,000 hits and 300 homers. However, by the time he landed on the #MNTwins, he was basically finished. He lasted all of 14 games, eventually being released in July 2006. He was in Spring Training w/the Mets in 2007, but didn't make the team.

#BlackHistoryMonth salute to Hank Thompson, first Black player on the Browns and the Giants. Part of the first NL/AL all-Black OF with Monte Irvin 🎂 and Willie Mays. And don’t sleep on this line from his SABR Bio: “On April 4, 1948, Thompson had shot and killed one James Crow in a Dallas bar.”

Mario Lemieux was literally the Ken Griffey Jr. of the modern NHL. Playing during the same era, they both could have been the GOATs of their sports, but instead ended up being elite greats that just couldn't stay healthy.
