Free seminar! On Thu, 27 Feb, 5:30pm UK time (12:30pm New York/18:30 Brussels), Saida Bondini (Zurich & Florence) will speak about ‘Earthquake Hazards and Art Making in Early Modern Italy: Novelty, Memory, and Cyclicity’. Hybrid: On Zoom & in person at IHR London www.history.ac.uk/seminars/ita...

It's happening!

Books designed to be read only by human eyes are different from books designed to be read by machines, which is why Google will tell you that the phrase “shake my booty” can be found in an 1863 English translation of Don Quixote.

Sadly, I think much of this article is true. It seems that genuine investment in the north of the UK - the 4th most regionally unequal country in the OECD ahead of only Turkey, Colombia and Hungary - is again seen as an “unaffordable luxury.” www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Before I went off to get my masters degree, I had coffee with my undergraduate advisor, and I remember her telling me: “Just remember, don’t let theory overpower your work to the detriment of the real people you’re studying.” I think about that a lot, not just in writing, but in life.

Call for papers! "Moved Apart" is hosting a conference on early modern global separation in Lund, Sweden from 20 to 22 August 2025. 300-word abstracts are due by 3 March 2025. #EarlyModern #16thC #17thC #skystorians #AcademicSky #cfp

HERE YOU ALL ARE! We're the "Europe & the World, 1500-1800" seminar @ihr.bsky.social. We host exciting papers and sessions by scholars of all seniority with a wide interest in the #EarlyModern. Come and join us, in @ihrlibrary.bsky.social or on zoom! www.history.ac.uk/seminars/eur... #SkyStorians

There’s still time to sign. As @earlymodernjohn.bsky.social eloquently put it, sitting in a fancier deckchair won’t help to steer us away from the existential threat of the iceberg. I’m also not keen on the idea of throwing colleagues overboard in pursuit of a swankier place to park my posterior.

Podcast update 🎙️ We’re looking for speakers for our new series. The theme is ‘History and Entertainment’ and we welcome any variations on that theme. If you’re interested, feel free to DM us here or email [email protected]

Russia's war against Ukraine and the West is also an assault on knowledge and information. It affects us all. On 17 February, celebrated writer and thinker Peter Pomerantsev helps us fight back. Free + open to the public w registration: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/how-to-win...

This was *SO* fascinating — the weaponisation of Jewish pain and Philosemitism, proprietory commemoration, the dangers of fossilising memory, etc. I can’t wait to read the article Jazmine Contreras & @nicolaaspbarr.bsky.social are writing. In the meantime, read this about politics of remembrance:

EXCITEMENT!!! OUR PROGRAMME IS LIVE! Would you look at all these fascinating panels and presentations -- the #EarlyModern continues to fascinate. Have a peak www.rensoc.org.uk/srs-biennial... and get excited for 2-5 July in Bristol for #RenSoc25! #SkyStorians

Final push on this from me before the weekend. Please sign if you agree and you haven't already! We will keep it open as long as we can, but don't delay! ucucommons.org/2025/02/13/m...

I miss Ama getting on a little train to go to the suzuki stage #sanremo

Now that @bsky.app have pinned tweets, high time for self-promotion of book that came out earlier this year w/Elodie Peyrol, Agnes Delahaye, and Bertrand Van Ruymbeke from @manchesterup.bsky.social : manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk/9781526167330/

👏 👏 👏 well done, spotify. This is very funny #Sanremo2025

The cat is waiting patiently for the Sanremo music festival to begin

If you're interested in soil and other earthy matters, feel free to come along to this ASLE-UKI online seminar that I've been involved with organising! 📅 19th Feb, 2-4pm (GMT) Full details and registration here: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/common-gro...

The CFP has been extended to the end of Feb so there is still plenty of time to submit a proposal. It's online or in person ☺️ #reformazing #earlymodern #skystorians #churchhistory

I can happily report that the "Hide Google AI Overviews" Firefox add-on seems to be working very well and getting rid of all that AI slop from Google's search results. An identically-named extension is also available for Chrome, but I haven't tested it.

NEW SPECIAL ISSUE! And it’s a beautiful one: on Exile and Innovation in the #EarlyModern World Find the full issue here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/toc/14774658... #SkyStorians

This is well worth a read

Someone hacked the payment system in Tbilisi public transport, and it’s playing protest chants and speeches. This is, by far, my favorite form of the #GeorgiaProtests.

Day 55 large-scale, continuous; day 85 overall. We want new, free and fair elections and the release of the regime prisoners. #GeorgiaProtests #NewElectionsforGeorgia

I spoke with Garry Kasparov about the issues with the Russian opposition and why they're just searching for a "good tsar" unless they finally confront Russian imperialism head-on. My latest for @kyivindependent.com kyivindependent.com/garry-kaspar...
