Getting Started

The average American is now tasked with the unenviable and seemingly impossible position of course-correcting a government enmeshed in big money & navigating a media landscape built on stoking our worst inclinations.

“The illiterate of the 21st century,” Alvin Toffler accurately wrote, “will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.” We are seeing this play out in real time. And boy are there are a lot of illiterate people.

In many ways, #AI is unique. In others, it is like any other tool. A miter saw can expedite & improve the craftsmanship of your home improvement project or it can set you back if you don’t properly measure angles & dimensions. The work of measuring is always there.

Step 1: Overturn #CitizensUnited Step 2: Bolster #FEC Step 3: Implement #Rank-Choice Voting + auto runoff until candidate hits majority Step 4: Abolish #ElectoralCollege; the above system does better at upholding the principles the EC claims to uphold Step 0: Hound gov't officials;or is it too late

People tend to over-rely on #AI answers. Harmful in many cases but what if beneficial in others? Social media could use AI fact-checking to combat the erosion of #truth. A recent Science study showed AI dialogue cut conspiratorial beliefs — like believing #Trump's Big Lie — by 20% on avg.

More info isn’t the cure for democratic societies. #Truth isn’t winnowed through the sieve of the market place of ideas. It is warped & obscured. #Tech won’t save us. Left to our own devices—literally, figuratively—we can’t even save ourselves. We must pass laws that buoy truth in a sea of bullshit.

“The biggest problem facing our nation is misinformation at scale…. The cost of doing nothing is democracy’s end.” - @bostonjoan.bsky.social Back in 2021, during a Senate hearing on the effects of engagement-model algorithms.
