I have a new book out! Engulfed: How Saudi Arabia Bought Sport, and the World, published March 27th by @blinkbooks.bsky.social It’s about a county undergoing incredible change, about ambition, manipulation and, most importantly, power. And sport is at the centre of it all. geni.us/EngulfedHB

Feyenoord, PSV and Brugge have all played scintillating football over the past week. Huge, deserved boost for medium-sized leagues at a time when it's sorely needed. And short-term redemption, at least, for a Champions League whose last 16 was otherwise going to be same countries doing same things.

Could solve many of the calendar problems by handing the Champions League to Real Madrid now.

Level of VAR interference in this absolutely fine Palace goal is so painfully unnecessary.

⛔Trapped by debt - Deported without warning Saudi Arabia’s sports ambitions rest on 13 million migrant workers, many of whom endure exploitation, wage theft & squalid conditions. Journalist Pete Pattison spoke to some of them: Kabir, Anwar, Mukhtar & Shakirum👉 www.playthegame.org/news/debt-sw...

This is what should be on every front page right now. What's happening in the US right now is an illegal power grab by a private citizen. IT'S A COUP. It's a digital coup. It's Musk who's leading it. The consequences are terrifying. And it's coming for us next. 1/ open.substack.com/pub/broligar...

Inevitably to the Visit Rwanda sponsorship bringing a reputational stain on Arsenal and Bayern. The consequences of being sponsored by a state run by questionable regime. Arsenal hasn’t commented. Bayern studying, meanwhile Rwanda-backed rebels (UN claim) running amok in Congo. Football welcomes all

Extra time could be for the chop in Uefa competitions - no change straightaway but the idea is gaining traction internally. Story: www.theguardian.com/football/202...

Mainstream British politics feels very oblivious to the threat that Trump/Musk’s complete assault on US democracy poses for the U.K. The US, Britain’s ‘special relationship’, is turning into a managed democracy at warp speed. That’s an existential risk

Agree with this thread and France is far from the only example.

Judgment night coming up for the new Champions League format. Plenty think it has gone well, and some are falling over themselves to take credit. Perhaps it will stay the course but it’s also laid bare some unpleasant truths. www.theguardian.com/football/202...

Result of the week in Europe is RFS beating Ajax 1-0 last night – RFS one of the best and most interesting setups around, certainly relative to their size, and this had been coming.

Significant moment in Norway, where clubs from the top two divisions have voted to abolish VAR. Will be their formal recommendation to Norwegian FA ahead of decision in March.
