The notion that Trump's "I'm king" tweet is "just trolling" or "a joke" presents an opportunity to recreate my just-joking thread (porting it over from the Bad Place): 1. I wrote my PhD dissertation on the social function of humor (in literature & film) and here's the thing about "just joking."

Trump's executive order is the direct equivalent of the Nazis' Enabling Act (Ermächtigungsgesetz) of 1933, though that was a law passed by the Nazi-dominated parliament rather than a presidential decree. If US lawmakers accept this, they are accepting fascist tyranny & everything that follows.

You think evil is going to come into your houses wearing big black boots. It doesn’t come like that. Look at the language. It begins in the language. —Joseph Brodsky

Europe urgently needs its own plan of action concerning Ukraine and our security, or else other global players will decide about our future. Not necessarily in line with our own interest. This plan must be prepared now. There’s no time to lose.

Would obviously be terrible if any of these vulnerabilities were exploited

For a UK person, however horrific the Trump regime in the US may be, the behaviour of the Labour government is surely even more disappointing, depressing and disgusting

This is brilliant - bookshop.org are selling e-books, now, too. Every purchase financially supports local, independent bookstores. Buy on the site, and read in their app... bookshop.org/info/ebooks

The big question for me is - how do you say Kurt Lewin's surname? I prefer LEVin because I'm sure that's how he'd have said it originally. But some US ppl say levEEN. And most UK ppl seem to say LOOwin as if it was an English name.

Tfw you update iOS and the Mail app starts behaving like a moron again

"the study concluded that reCAPTCHA has cost society an estimated 819 million hours of human time valued at $6.1 billion in wages while generating massive profits for Google through its tracking capabilities and data collection"

On 22 January, GB News presenter Josh Howie repeated a homophobic slur linking the LGBTQ+ community to paedophilia. This is offensive, wrong and unlawful. Join me and @GoodLawProject to file a complaint to Ofcom  action.goodlawproject.org/ofcom-stop-g...

"ChatGPT and other Large Language Models are not a decision-making technology, they are decision-removing technologies. They generate text, but most powerfully, they generate pretext." Wonderful insight by @eryk.bsky.social, as usual. mail.cyberneticforests.com/a-fork-in-th...

Bruges/Brugge (the name means „bridge” I believe)

If true, this is unbelievably reprehensible - an early test of Labour Government’s green commitment and they’ve comprehensively failed. @zero-hour.bsky.social

Happy to be among 20+ national organisations calling for bold and hopeful change in how public services work with people and communities – shifting from current ‘do to’ mindsets and practices towards a ‘do with’ approach. Learn more about the #DoWith movement 🔗

Would anyone be able to help @alvaromontoro.bsky.social‬ and I out and give this Spanish translation a second opinion? github.com/Heydon/princ...

1. The UK government’s pursuit of GDP growth at all costs is an assault on our natural wealth, which will impoverish us all. It might be able to massage the headline figures by converting the living world into money, but it does not improve our lives.🧵

finally saw a cybertruck in person

I just had a very lovely chat with @pixlz.com who said something that I can't stop thinking about. It's so true. "We're all only temporarily not disabled" You should really start caring about accessibility if you don't already. Future you will need it.

Renee DiResta @noupside.bsky.social, author of the fantastic "Invisible Rulers" about the politics of disinformation, is doing a webinar on Tuesday - don't miss it! www.tickettailor.com/events/westc...

This is a fascinating little story of our times. 1 hyper-partisans & contrarian nitwits make obviously false claims. 2 fact-checkers, journalists etc easily debunk the lies. 3 AI launders the misinformation, vomiting it on to the internet as “fact”. 4 Gobshites double down on their BS, citing AI.
