"Peatlands occupy just 3% of all land, but contain more carbon than all of the world’s forests. However, farmers and miners are draining the peatlands, releasing so much CO2 that if they were a country, they would be the fourth biggest polluter in the world." 🧪🌍 www.theguardian.com/environment/...

How did they get here? Some people are responsible for orders of magnitude more CO2 than others. As a rule of thumb, those least responsible will be those that suffer the most.

Two studies published yesterday in Nature Climate Change find that Earth has effectively already warmed 1.5°C. Yes, this seems to be happening silently, but to be clear: over 1.5C of heating some places become uninhabitable and the risk of tipping points rises enormously. 1/n

Key issue of the times ...laws are no good without enforcement and Trump has a fair bit of power over enforcement, plus senate+congress majorities on his side.

After the Nazi takeover in 1933 they began shutting down the homosexual infrastructure of clubs, networks, communities and publications. In 1934 brutal persecution of homosexuals and eliminating all manifestations of homosexuality became a priority of the state. In 1935 large numbers were arrested.

Short (about 15p+refs) thoughtful and densely written paper on 'The Impact of Generative AI on Critical Thinking'. tldr: not entirely negative. I expect the coming gen of Assistants will increasingly add a chain of thought and show critical reasoning where appropriate. advait.org/files/lee_20...

If there’s one main takeaway from Kanye’s deeply hateful ranting on X, it’s that even self-proclaimed “free speech” protector Elon Musk, like old Twitter, has limits and a need to moderate content. It shows that his “free speech” pitch has always been full of holes.

Trump says he’s fired the chairman of the Kennedy Center and named himself chairman.

While China and others nurture home grown talent, the US, instead of buying up the global market in STEM, will be left with nothing but a few credulous engineers who think that sending someone to Mars is helping humanity. Those who are left will also be seeking a more civilised world.

Guys, I’ve just seen the worst job advert in the world. Absolute state of this.

1/ @lizdye.bsky.social & I just telephonically attended what we thought was going to be an all-day evidentiary hearing in the Alex Jones bankruptcy regarding approval of a settlement that would have paid out the Texas Sandy Hook families. Instead, it was a 20-minute ruling in favor of Alex Jones.

Tesla's mission is "accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy". Taking a 3 tonne truck to buy a bag of oranges through a fleet of empty robotaxis (built by robots!) shuttling to their next fare might help a bit. While the boss casually dismantles environmental and climate science.

For a deeper understanding of what is threatened in these departmental raids, consider reading 'The Fifth Risk' by Michael Lewis, stories following the first Trump inauguration. Project 2025 called NOAA an agency ‘harmful to US prosperity’. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...
