Sometimes Facebook delivers a really brutal reminder of what a sad child I was.

The other day, I was at Herne Hill station and the 'Manifest Destiny/succulent Chinese meal' speech played from the tannoy. Almost no-one even looked up (it was like 7pm on a Saturday). Nobody seemed to claim responsibility. Any explanations? Was it all in my head?

I really loathe this trend towards intellectual minimalism. "This is a victory for common sense," we're told. But really it's a victory for revanchist literalism that seems unwilling – or unable – to compute the incredible complexity of human society.

And the reason is that nobody wants to write these pieces, because it's not worth it for the amount of abuse, harassment and (probably) career damage that you'll get in return.

List of UK-based publications who have published reactive opinion criticising today's Supreme Court ruling: • ? • ? • ? They want to act like they're not the establishment, but this is media capture at its most profound.

What's Cristiano Ronaldo planning to with all this money? Like, I can understand the desire to acquire wealth as part of building a big, powerful company. But he's just a guy – with more money than he could ever spend – desperately wanting more and more and more. To what end?

detective: hmmm… what would an arsonist do? *sees boxes of matches* detective: i’ve got it!

*detective immediately burns down police station*

I know a lot of lawyers. I've met a lot of judges. I take with a pinch of salt their understanding of a complex issue that is clearly a social and philosophical one, rather than a legal one. This was always the wrong forum in which to litigate this debate.

Guys, I feel like we already did this conspiracy theory on a much grander scale...

Regression via legal semantics would be one thing, if this weren't also transparently going to be grist to the mill of a generalised, unempathetic social regression.

"Why a Nuclear Bomb Destroying Your Least Favourite Neighbour's House is Nothing to Fear"

Me, when I leave the house for 10 minutes.

I would post the AI-generated “starter pack” action figure meme - complete with caption about how I’m an “out of the box thinker” - on LinkedIn.

👏 Teenagers dressed up in tuxedos to see the Minions movie and people condemned them. 👏 Teenagers cheer for the Minecraft movie and people condemn them too. 👏 It’s time that people were honest about what they really want: teenagers banned from all public spaces.

Fascinating data, what could possibly have caused the huge spike in podcasts being created in 2020? 🤔

Your Friends & Neighbours is fine, and makes the most of Jon Hamm's superbly limited performing range.

Hundreds of people with Parkinson’s gathering today in Westminster to have their voices heard, as part of the @moversand.bsky.social World Parkinson’s Day awareness campaign. Most importantly, go here: ParkyPetition.com

I'm not a betting man, but if I had to have a flutter, I'd guess that this will be 'bad'.

Some absolutely heinous AI being deployed in the new Pulp music video – Spike Island – followed by one of the more feeble self-exonerations for outsourcing creativity to AI.

Black Mirror hasn't been good since it moved to Netflix. With such ripe targets in Big Tech today, season 7 feels like a real missed opportunity. Too few shocks, too much implausible exposition.

This dumb scene from The Office basically sums up America’s relationship with Trump.

The Great Gatsby turns 100 this week. It is a great book about a doomed age, written, amazingly, before that era had ended. For @the-independent.com, I've written about how, a century later, we're living through another epoch defining shock, and how the warning signs are all in Fitzgerald's writing.

Double-screening Black Mirror and the news 🥶

Group-chat has been speculating this morning about which book has the worst 'copies sold' to 'completed reads' ratio. My suggestion was Thomas Piketty's Capital in the 21st Century. Other suggestions?

A subject no-one but me cares about, but the quality of the BBC's live football commentary is appalling. This refers to a chance from Guilherme, not Rodriguez, which is egregious because they A) look nothing alike, and B) Rodriguez wasn't on the pitch. Happens all the time with the BBC commentary.

Made a completely vibes based -and vain - Grand National pick 😎

Really good to have @drproudman.bsky.social on Law & Disorder this week to discuss the fight to modernise the legal profession - and the distance still to travel.

Dying for Sex, lovelier than it is horny (but that's ok).

I think 3-5 episodes is the correct amount of television to offer a show before abandoning it if you're not enjoying. There's a lot of television to go around – and a finite amount of time on earth – and I don't believe in telling people to "just persevere for another 20 hours!"

I don't want to sound naive, but wtf is happening in Japan?

I honestly, at first glance, thought Alex Turner was Rory Stewart.

📢NEW POLITICAL CYCLE EPISODE!📢 What's going on with Marine Le Pen and does it provide a roadmap for democracies dealing with the rise of the far-right? @emilyctamkin.bsky.social and @tomhamilton.bsky.social are joined by @julienhoez.eu to discuss. Listen: pod.fo/e/2c1c90

Corey Booker's Marathon Speech would be a good prog rock band name.

Of course it's an incredibly dumb feature of American politics, but on the plus side, Cory Booker is on the verge of knocking Strom Thurmond, noted opponent of civil rights, into 2nd place in the league table of longest filibusters.

The Last of US series 2, new Black Mirror, Jon Hamm's AppleTV+ series Your Friends & Neighbors: an absolute elite day of TV reviewing 🤌

This is quite the revelation. Usually I lull myself to sleep with 45 minutes doom-scrolling through videos where Americans scream-sell me drop-shipped plastic products 🥱
