Hmm.. there's a misunderstanding about "rare earth metals". They're not all that "rare", though only rarely present in currently workable concentrations - in China, Australia, Californa & Colorado. Yup, places with mountains! With better extraction methods they won't be as rare as they are now.

But here's another thought... If Trump forces Ukraine into a deal based on what he alleges US has spent so far helping Ukraine militarily, that is immensely profitable to US (& Trump?) companies. He has then bought an asset. So it's for him and USA to defend this asset. And why should anyone else?

In diplomacy East-West is also changing, in this case into 4 or 5 "Spheres of Influence". For trade each will develop its own internal common market & external tariff wall.
