Jarvis: You're not going to like what I'm saying next, but we are in the middle of a totalitarian fascist coup in this country.

my superpower for predicting things? paying attention to what people with power say and do

Classroom/Library enrollment was down pretty bad in February. National chaos and uncertainly likely has something to do with it. Can you help me make sure that all the educators on bluesky know Skype a Scientist exists and is ready to connect them with scientists? Every RT helps! #EduSky #STEMEd

I made this the other night while procrastinating, mainly because I thought all the posts about the blackout were boring. It feels like there is momentum bringing people together!

Must read. Basically says the pandemic was as terrible as the 'alarmists' predicted but "our memories are so warped by denial, suppression and sublimation that Covid revisionism no longer even qualifies as news." www.nytimes.com/2025/02/26/o...

More hits to #NIH: "The Trump administration has imposed a new restriction on employment that could push out thousands of NIH’s senior scientists: The agency cannot retain scientists in 1-year to 4-year positions that have long been routinely renewed." 🧪 @jocelynkaiser.bsky.social at @science.org

The schedule for childhood MMR changed between the 1970s to 1980s, depending on where you lived. Many people never got a 2nd dose (unless your college asked for proof). And It's also possible for measles immunity to wane over time. If you're middle aged and not sure you had a 2nd jab, get an MMR.

For over a year, it's been unclear why a lot of farmland is being assembled in Wilmot. @thenarwhal.ca & Waterloo Region Record have learned it's for a possible Toyota site to keep the automaker here amid Trump’s tariff threat An election eve scoop by me & Terry Pender thenarwhal.ca/ontario-wilm...

I wrote a somewhat wonk-ish, election-relevant piece on Ontario's lack of a minimum paid sick leave policy. Kind of weird that we don't have one. Other provinces do. Even three U.S. Red-States voted to adopt paid sick leave via ballot measures in last year's election. But Ontario? Nope.

I've been screaming this for years.

Just yesterday while on PBS News Hour I said that I will have confidence that federal vaccine policy is uncompromised as long as the external advisory committees continue to meet. Now meetings for both VRBPAC and ACIP have been cancelled. I don't like this.

Holy crap, HHS cancelled VRBPAC. (For non-public health people: This is the US contribution to the WHO-led identification and selection of flu strains for the next flu shot. There are other countries contributing. But US labs and expertise have always been a huge factor in the final agreement.)

Work in progress from our gang…Covid acquired in hospital is about 10% more likely to kill you than Covid for which you’re hospitalized. Makes sense…people hospitalized with other illnesses have enough going on. Giving them Covid on top of that is deadly.

I think if not answering an email is a fireable offense then canceling Ebola prevention should be a fireable offense.

Aww. So sad for these kids.

With "Strong Mayor" powers, Ontario's municipal leaders are now extensions of the Ford government, making local councils redundant. That's why Ontario mayors are tripping over themselves to endorse Ford. We've been post-democracy here for quite some time. www.corruptario.ca/why-your-may...

Trickle down economics. This is exactly how it works.

Probably my favorite passage from this post:

Ontarians, please vote. No voter card required; just photo ID & proof of address. They make it really easy. Don't know where? Enter your postal code at the the elections Ontario website & all shall be revealed. Just vote. People not voting last time is how we got in this mess in the first place. ✅

Heart disease in women is frequently missed and discounted, even though it is the number one cause of death globally. A new study shows A.I. of the ECG can accurately identify heart disease risk in women www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

Gender biases that lead to burnout: - women's overtime rewarded less than men's (overwork in women in presumed to be due to lower competence) - women's efficiency undervalued - women's fatigued is underestimated / men's is overestimated www.forbes.com/sites/michel...

In 2021, NY State passed a law requiring that ISPs provide $15, 25 Mbps broadband to poor people. The telecom industry got so mad about it, they begged the Supreme Court to make it illegal. It didn't work, now CA, MA, and VT are eyeing similar laws.

🇨🇦 CANADIANS PLEASE REPOST! This article is from 2017 but today it needs to be revisited. Why do we have US coa trains coming through the border of Southern BC heading to China via our port. FREE TARIFF THE CRAP OUT OF THESE TRAINS!! @tariffscostus.bsky.social thetyee.ca/Opinion/2017...

Do not make this abuser the mayor of New York.

For at least the last five years I just ask, “How is your day going?” It’s smaller scale, doesn’t require people to reckon the larger existential and ongoing problems as much. And most people are just surviving one day at a time.

🚨 Special #AltGov Alert 🚨 An original - the OG from the stacks - is here! Please welcome my friend & library afficionado @altlofc.bsky.social to Bluesky!

I keep thinking about this. For the same reason out-of-towners think New York is a crime-ridden wreck, or SF is a city of zombies -- the ultra-rich have gone completely crazy about the real world, because it's not a place they've actually visited lately.

Happy #BlackHistoryMonth ! Feb 25: Q: Why does it seem like Black folk don't contribute much to society or science or history? Most inventions seem to be from Europeans? Don't cancel me! A: Racism. Non-white accomplishments are plentiful, but are often invisible. Read the whole linked thread.

Anyone else familiar with the #OvertonWindow? Here’s why making empathy central to constant public discourse about any human right is important and opening the Overton window toward empathy.

I think people asking what Trump's distracting from miss the point. This is shifting the #OvertonWindow RIGHT NOW for the mentally under-nourished & most easily manipulated people on the entire planet, the American people. None of it's funny. It's deadly serious. #cdnpoli

The face of Canada to much of the non-European world: the home of some of the most brutal and rapacious corporations.

Kevin O'Leary to @ianhanomansing.bsky.social on Cross Country Checkup, rough quote: "The Canadian dollar has dropped 40% against the US dollar under Trudeau." Fact check: the CAD has dropped 34% from the 2011 peak, but just 4% of that drop happened under Trudeau. The big drop happened under Harper.

Now I’m not a lawyer but this feels like premeditated malicious intent, or perhaps some legal term that means the same thing.
