Does anyone remember that incredible essay about 'I, Joan' that ended on a really profound line about trans people being defined by a shared experience of repression? I want to quote it, but can't find it I think it was originally for a newspaper, but published on a blog after the paper dropped it?

I'm all for instrumental coalitions around specific issues: sometimes winning just has to take priority over less immediate concerns. But equally, the compromises they require can simply not be worth it - plus I can't work w someone who has a go at me when I go to the loo halfway through the meeting

"From where I stand as both a theologian and metal scholar... Plague of Angels are not invading a sacred space: rather this concert invites fans into an age old spiritual dialogue between art and church... where human experience meets holy ground" modernchurch.org.uk/two-worlds-c...

This is an excellent thread dismantling the pseudoscience behind the transphobic/gender critical definitions of sex used by Trump to enact his hateful agenda. A couple points: First, UK trans supporters need to rehearse these arguments. GC's are aiming to redefine sex in the Equality Act very soon

“We must advocate for policies that recognize and respect the full spectrum of gender identities,” Wright stated. “We must support transgender individuals in their fight for equality, respect and dignity. And we must hold our leaders accountable for... harm” www.newwaysministry.org/2025/02/20/p...

I wonder whether there isn't an issue of cultural competence in how we try and evaluate these arguments. The purpose of these statements is not to give a universally convincing rationale for policy. It's to offer justification that will be accepted by specific decisionmakers, w specific beliefs 🧵

You can see this in action in narratives about left intolerance themselves. They work hard to understand and validate right wing reactions to left attitudes, but don't offer the same understanding towards the left attitudes in question

I actually get why these attitudes might trigger a reaction in other political groups, driving them further to the right. No-one likes to be viewed as misinformed, credulous, or prejudiced. But also, surely a healthy politics has to admit discussions of whether people *are* these things? 🧵

This is the inevitable outworking of how trans people are always portrayed as the perpetrators of sexual abuse and never the victims. Not only are we pre-emptively accused something that disproportionately happens to us and disbelieved as survivors, but our access to support is stripped.
