Absolute Dialetheism comes to Yale! We had a productive workshop on German Idealism over the weekend. Good conversations with Michael Della Rocca, Jake McNulty, Paul Franks, Clark Wolf, Giuliano Infantino, as well as other friends and graduate students. Yale really is a great place for philosophy!!

Stefan Johansson (Swedish, 1876-1955), Night Light, 1934.

"When Want and cold Neglect had chill'd thy soul, Athirst for Death I see thee drench the bowl! Thy corpse of many a livid hue On the bare ground I view, Whilst various passions all my mind engage" — lines 5–9 Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

"When I behold, upon the night’s starred face, Huge cloudy symbols of a high romance, And think that I may never live to trace Their shadows with the magic hand of chance; And when I feel, fair creature of an hour, That I shall never look upon thee more" -- John Keats.

Goya, 'The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters.'

"Now the hour to part has come. I go to die, you go to live. Which of us goes to the better lot is known to no one, except the god." -- Plato, Apology, (41e-42a).

My Saturday night with Aquinas.

"The Unexamined Life is not worth living." --Plato's Apology (38a5–6) "ὁ δὲ ἀνεξέταστος βίος οὐ βιωτὸς ἀνθρώπῳ."

I like Ketchup on Eggs, Waffles, & Pancakes. I prefer flat diet Pepsi. I can drink warm beer. My favorite thing in the world is Tomato & Feta sandwiches. I don't like the Beatles. I have never been a fan of wine. I read out loud. Chocolate & peanut butter will make world peace.

Happy Schopenhauer’s birthday to all who celebrate

Just recorded the first podcast episode on René Descartes! It will air on March 30. Followed by a whole bunch of episodes, on his physics, skepticism, the immediate reception of the Meditations, his correspondence with Elizabeth, his ethics, etc. Mind you, I still have to write all of these!

“art is the highest for the philosopher [...] “it opens to him the most holy of holies, as it were, where one flame burns in eternal and original union, which otherwise exists separately in nature and history.” --- F. W. J. Schelling, 1800.

"For what nature reveals to those who unravel its secrets is the “odyssey of the spirit” dwelling inside, spirit “wonderfully deceived, searching for itself, fleeing itself.” -- F. W. J. Schelling, 1800.

“Every splendid painting,” he writes, “arises as if by lifting the invisible partition that separates the real and ideal world, and it is the only opening through which those figures and regions of the fantasy world fully emerge.” -- F. W. J. Schelling, 1800.

"Not to be coerced by the greatest, to be contained in the smallest, is divine." -- F. Hölderlin, Hyperion.
