Yesterday we heard that our Faculty Board Betascience decided to terminate our department of Earth Sciences wholesale because they believe lab-based science is "too expensive", closing one of the two broad Earth Science departments left in the Netherlands. Sad day for science.. vu.nl/en/news/2025...

Probably some of the coolest objects we've ever scanned in our #microXRF @amgc-vub.bsky.social were these Indonesian #Kris daggers. Turns out some of them were likely forged with #meteorite metal! Read all about it in our manuscript in MAPS: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Well that is quite worrisome... www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

“The opinion of the scientific and medical community as a whole is consistent and in favor of permanent standard time.” www.science.org/content/arti...

Nice study testing models for #solid #state #reordering of #clumped #isotope values in #carbonate. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Very cool!

Every once in awhile I'm reminded brachiopods are criminally underrated invertebrate animals. Their fossil record is absolutely spectacular with respect to taxonomic diversity and numerical abundance, and also they're just really cool little guys

Loving the discussion surrounding this @pnas.org publication on Phanerozoic #paleo #temperature evolution, one of the most interesting #paleoclimate discussions in my opinion. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Important study @science.org Advances Showing sediment records of past #tropical #cyclone activity. These types of #proxy records are incredibly important for our understanding of the impact of #climatechange on #extreme weather. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Cool study using #treering analysis to study precipitation variability over the past 4 centuries and aiding in the prediction of #extreme precipitation events and #droughts under future climate scenarios www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Did you know that the #animals people eat receive B12 supplements? So nonvegans take B12, too. Plus, all people over 50 are recommended to supplement B12, as their bodies may have reduced ability to absorb B12 from diet, due to age-related changes in digestion. Not just #vegans

This one deserves sharing if only for it's amazing headline 🤩. Well done @annaholmqvist.bsky.social & Rosemary Gillespie @ucberkeleyofficial.bsky.social, and a great read @science.org (Kuhnhäuser et al., www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...) www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Exciting work studying the chemical bonds in membrane lipids of #archaea (#marine #microbes) which are often used for #paleoclimate reconstructions suggests improvements to #temperature reconstructions. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

More carbon dioxide in oceans could harm carbon-eating microbes, speed climate change @science.org www.science.org/content/arti...

Very nice study @Palaeo3 by Petrizzo et al. reviewing and synthesizing #extinction of several shallow #marine #organisms during Ocean Anoxic Event 2, a period ~94 million years ago with widespread #oxygen depletion in Earth's #oceans with lessons for the future www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Excellent paper by Thomas Westerhold and colleagues using precise dating of marine sediments using astronomical #Milankovitch cycles to tease out the timing of #volcanism and #meteorite #impact during the extinction of the non-avian #dinosaurs www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

We are experiencing an assault on science unparalleled by anything I’ve seen in my life. It’s not one issue or another anymore, the entire institution is under attack by the most powerful individuals in the country. This Friday, where will you be? standupforscience2025.org

🚨 #NOAA is essential for weather forecasting, climate research, and public safety. AGU stands with the scientific community in urging Congress to protect and strengthen NOAA, not dismantle it. Our economy, environment, and safety depend on it.

"losses of marine species' contemporary habitats continue for centuries beyond reaching stable global warming levels ... Any impact assessed at transient warming levels thus largely underestimates the total impact on marine species." @egubg.bsky.social bg.copernicus.org/articles/22/...

Great paper by Gray and Brandon @Gcubed @agu.org on the #clumped #isotope #temperature relationship in gar fish scales. I especially enjoyed reading about the treatment of effective vs mean temperatures and seasonal bias in these calibration studies. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Enjoyed reading this nice piece @pnas.org on the state of the art of #sustainable flying. TLDR: It's going to take a long time before flying will be truly sustainable and #biofuel, #synthetic fuel and #hydrogen all have downsides. Fly less and tax #carbon #emissions www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

The Department of Geology at @tcddublin.bsky.social is hiring two tenure-track assistant professors. One position in #Palaeontology, and one in #Hydrogeology / Crustal Fluid Flow. Please see Trinity HR Vacancy Page (under "Academic" and "School of Natural Sciences"): www.tcd.ie/hr/vacancies/

Good read! Alas, #sustainable flying is a long, long way away... @pnas.org www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

@jeffsebo.bsky.social @birchlse.bsky.social and I put a lot of philosophy into our new Science Perspective on animal consciousness. Mill's analogical argument + inference to the best explanation + careful experiments = justification for consciousness in many animals. Where might it end?

Evaluating animal consciousness Really exciting to live in times of a shifting paradigm regarding #animal #consciousness. A lot about how we use/treat animals in our societies will have to change in response... www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Reviews and syntheses: Potential and limitations of oceanic carbon dioxide storage via reactor-based accelerated weathering of limestone @egubg.bsky.social egusphere.copernicus.org/preprints/20...

Pretty cool study into the rise and fall of #Indigenous peoples in North America based on population density analysis of #radiocarbon dates. Seems the European settlers were lucky to encounter a population already in decline with diminished political structure. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

...and another nice #preprint with #clumped #isotope analyses from the @amgc-vub.bsky.social @vubrussel.bsky.social lab egusphere.copernicus.org/preprints/20...

This looks interesting for #foram #researchers. New paper on the size-normalized weight proxy out in @egubg.bsky.social bg.copernicus.org/articles/22/...

⏰New preprint altert⏰ Check out our latest work led by Aniket Mitra @amgc-vub.bsky.social combining #XRF, #SEM and #clumped #isotope analyses on #fossil #oyster shells to study the impact of global changes during the #Eocene #hothouse period on marine #biodiversity essopenarchive.org/doi/full/10....

Our paper led by former @brown-ibes.bsky.social postdoc Natasha Sekhon with former undergrad Annabelle Gao on LA-ICP-MS methods for speleothem analyses is out! We have some exciting climate records generated utilizing these methods that will appear in upcoming work. doi.org/10.1002/rcm....

Strong piece by @holdenthorp.bsky.social @science.org about the harmful mixup of #science and #policy in the #climate debate. Summary: human-caused #climatechange is fact, what we do about it is policy and subject to opinion. Let's not mix the two! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Nice new study by Hoffman et al. showcasing the use of #clumped #isotope measurements for accurate reconstructions of past #seasonal #temperature variability during the hot climate of the #Cretaceous (when dinosaurs roamed the Earth). www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Very groundbreaking finding from the #Bennu #astroid casts doubt on the #panspermia hypothesis of life('s building blocks) originating from outer space www.nature.com/articles/d41...

It is crazy to think how dangerous #climatechange can become and compare that to our response to the threat as a society... www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Traveling back from a couple of surprisingly mild-weather days @niozsearesearch.bsky.social collecting, labeling and measuring #cockles for this year's growth experiments. Time to investigate fluid incisions in shells and their use and impact on #climate reconstructions thanks to #NWO 🦪🌡️🧪📈

New paper in @science.org : "Reforestation can benefit many vertebrates, but models suggest that for most nonforest areas, doing nothing is better for biodiversity than afforestation or bioenergy cropping." More evidences that environmental crisis will be solved by doing less, not more 🌿 🧪 🌍

Proud to be a (small) part of this interesting #review on the use of #oyster #shells as archives of past #climate and #environmental change. Many thanks to Vincent Mouchi for leading the effort, it was a very enjoyable process :) aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
