Historic photos that look like a group on Rough Trade or Cherry Red in 1981 (Thread 1 of 3): Yuri Gagarin (centre) and friends at polytechnic in 1953. In my head, they sound like this youtu.be/NgQ6jQYw2ak

Metro: Pain as Spain mainly off the mains #TomorrowsPapersToday

Strange day at the Crucible. Both afternoon matches already done and dusted, and tonight's two clashes both likely to be all over after a single frame. Virgo's going to have to do an extended turn of his impressions tonight to keep the punters happy.

Garlic snow.

5/8/1984, Southbury Road, Enfield. Mario Kempes turns out as a Trialist for Spurs in a friendly v Enfield. Spurs win 7-0, but Kempes, only just 30, was not offered a deal. He had been released by Valencia because of ongoing injury issues & eventually ended up at Spanish minnows Hercules

Me and Judd Trump used to belong to the same snooker club. Taught him all he knows etc.

The glory of the cinema foyer 🙏

More brilliance from Ian Penman: 'Sinatra held the melody like a Fabergé egg he was turning about in his palm, assessing it from every angle, seeing how light dipped or flared in different positions, exploring the weave of word and melody.' [from the excellent It Gets Me Home, This Curving Track]

I've said it before, but I can't recommend this book highly enough. Here's Talese on Vogue's employees: 'a group of suave and wrinkle-proof women, who call each other "dear" and "dahling", and can speak in italics and curse in French'. 'Speak in italics' - just brilliant.

Oh, and being Countryfile magazine's Hunk of the Month too.

Almost finished the 14th book I've edited since January 1. Busy boy.

11 books in 12 years. Anyone got the lot? Final Destination Searching For Dexys Midnight Runners Field of Dreams Whatever Happened to the C86 Kids? The Hard Yards And It’s a Beautiful Day Boot Sale Butch Wilkins and the Sundance Kid Three Weeks, Eight Seconds The Bottom Corner Mr Gig

'You could hear the helicopter before you could see it' - Three Weeks, Eight Seconds 'Antes siquiera de que pudieran verlo sintieron el ruido que hacia el helicoptero' - Tres Semanas, Ocho Segundos 'Je hoorde het geluid van de helikopter al voordat je hem zag' - Drie Weken, Acht Seconden

#FallFriday Here's a playlist that I've just compiled featuring 43 cover versions by The Fall alongside the originals that inspired them open.spotify.com/playlist/3Kx...

This week's highlights: 1. New HMHB album announced. 2. Lovely David Quantick quote for my new book. 3. A good few offers of live events to do with said book. 4. Lidl having those pickled plum Japanese crisps back in. 5. Me *trouncing* the family at Yahtzee last night.

A quick game of Spot the Dog.

Too many books in September? Then buy one that's out in May...

Headline writer clearly a fan of Bristol-born post-punk funk.

The entire transcript of Time's interview with Trump is insane. Just to pick one moment: Trump says Biden would never do an interview with Time, then when told that he had asks how it went, then when told he can read it himself says that he had read it and it didn't go well time.com/7280114/dona...

Woah!

The full tracklisting of the new HMHB album... (1/2) 1. Horror Clowns Are Dickheads 2. Goodbye Sam, Hello Samaritans 3. Rawlplugs Of Yesteryear (Breaking The States) 4. The Bliss Of The Hereafter 5. McCalliog And His Hens 6. Record Store Day

Best (ie most intriguing) song title on the new HMHB album: McCalliog And His Hens. Goodbye Sam, Hello Samaritans is also a cracker.

THE GREATEST POSSIBLE NEWS. #HMHB propermusic.com/collections/...

Farage: "7.2 million foreign-born people have registered with GPs in the last 10 years... All I'm doing here is giving you cold hard facts". Well here's another cold hard fact - 40.6% of GPs in England and Wales are foreign born. The NHS would completely collapse without workers from abroad.

The new issue of @wsc.co.uk arrives. Inevitably, @camsell59.bsky.social's column is the first page devoured. This month it's on goalkeepers' fashions: "One of the goalies was subverting convention by wearing shorts in a shade of phosphorescent orange rarely seen outside the Oval Office."

This is the book mentioned, by the way. I've got a shitload here, in case anyone wants a signed one for postage (£4 UK) plus whatever you'd like to pay of the £9.99 cover price (zero is fine if you're skint). Drop me an email with your address at [email protected] & I'll get it out to you today.

Selby Leisure Centre’s come back round the block, and it’s never not funny.

Noisy dual carriageways, no village shop... Why are people only aware of these things *after* they've moved in?
