“One simple way [to push back] is to simply keep teaching exactly as we have been. This admin has made it clear that empirically verifiable knowledge itself is a threat…so they are attacking those of us who create knowledge.” Keep teaching, keep writing, and—fellow publishers—KEEP PUBLISHING.

If you’re a younger instructor wondering if you’ll ever stop obsessing over the one negative student evaluation in a pile of positive ones, I can tell you, drawing on nearly 15 years teaching experience: that I don’t know, man—not yet I guess?—I hope so at some point???!?!?

"But as most presidents have remained silent, some critics have blamed institutional neutrality, the concept that universities should refrain from making statements on social or political issues." This is what institutional neutrality leads to👇 www.insidehighered.com/news/governa...

Calling all 18C specialists! ANU English's own Amelia Dale (along with Claire Knowles, La Trobe & Nicola Parsons, Sydney) is convening "The Unliterary Eighteenth Century: Gender and Marginal Texts" symposium. Registration is free, more details here: genderinstitute.anu.edu.au/events/unlit...

I'm spending today reacquainting myself with some of Kelly Wisecup's wonderful scholarship in preparation for her visit to Aotearoa in May - if you're in Wellington and would like to come along to events where Kelly is speaking, please reach out!

I'm currently performing 'a show for when you feel lonely.' for Wellington's NZ Fringe. Sold out so added an extra show 4pm Sun 2 Mar. Venue is my apartment! Find out more: tickets.fringe.co.nz/event/446:62... #theatre #fringe

I ❤️ librarians so much. Requested an inter loan yesterday. Our library reaches out to US library. Too fragile to send but they will digitise for me. PDF arrived today 😍😍😍

A waiter in a café walks straight past me with my cup of tea. I wave. He looks over and smiles. Waiter: I'm sorry. I was having a memory. Of my brother. And so somehow, I was looking instead for him.

I rather like my corner of the 9th floor, side-by-side with @ingridhorrocks.bsky.social PS The compulsory Bulldogs fandom was mandated by @dougalmcneill.bsky.social, not me!

This was completely predictable but still disappointing. Apart from anything else, it fails Govt's own focus on growth. You can't grow the economy without a skilled workforce & a thriving higher ed sector. "Everyone must go" overseas to study & research, I guess 🤷‍♀️ www.thepost.co.nz/politics/360...

I've extended the deadline & adjusted the wording on this scholarship after queries from prospective students. Please encourage students interested in a funded PhD on poetry in either 18c/Romantic and/or settler colonialism & Indigenous sovereignty to get in touch! www.wgtn.ac.nz/scholarships...

So pleased to announce our 1st keynote for the joint 18C & Romantic studies conference that we're hosting in Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand, this November....Manu Samriti Chander (Georgetown)! @profchander.bsky.social More details about the conference here: www.wgtn.ac.nz/fhss/about/e...

This👇Who could have guessed? 👀

Alexander Pope wrote poems that were so mean grown men quit writing, and Kendrick is firmly in his tradition

Not long till the new academic year begins - so many amazing texts and courses to think about! I ♥️ the work that my colleagues do 👇

Our government's policy on research in the humanities and social sciences making news overseas for all the wrong reasons👇

“You know you want to” says Seymour to a paepae that has turned its back on him. That’s the language of abusers. ACT has a consent problem at every level #ToitūTeTiriti

If you know Devoney, this cover is very Devoney! Congratulations @devoney.bsky.social ♥️🎉

We all benefit when Te Tiriti o Waitangi is respected www.waikatotimes.co.nz/nz-news/3605... #toitutetiriti #nzpol

I guess I would feel this, given my research interests, but yes!!! Poems and treaties are deeply intertwined. It's valuable to think about and perform their resonances ♥️

Guess I haven’t done this yet: I do 18th-century lit and Indigenous studies, lately museums, collecting, and Indigenous art and aesthetic expression. First book on Native people in 18thC British lit, next book on reading Indigenous material culture in the 18thC. utorontopress.com/978148750344...

Meanwhile in New Zealand

Boston Public Library, USA

It's actually 2 Feb here in Aotearoa, but for North American applicants for this PhD scholarship, I will still look at applications that come in today. Please use the link below to see what application materials are needed & to find my email address for submitting them. Would love to hear from you!

My goodness, this book is so good & (almost eerily) exactly what I needed to read. My notes are largely exclamation marks & a harvest of brilliant observations. Have to go for a walk on the beach now to process all my feelings about the Intro! But thanks @maxcavitch.bsky.social for writing this ❤️

NZ likewise. Unfortunately, the gov’t has decided not to support science, research and technology in any meaningful way

Only a few days to go - applications due to me by 1 February, so please share widely and encourage suitable junior scholars to come and work with me in New Zealand! Details in the link below @bars.bsky.social @asecsoffice.bsky.social

For those following my post about elegy yesterday - if you're the right person for the chapter below, please DM Max 👇
