the framing of this story is a great example of how the US conception of freedom of expression is way out of line with how many other parts of the world understand it. the replies from brazilians make that clear. we need to stop allowing that US framing of speech to seep into our policy debates.

Let me state the obvious. Ending the war is very easy. Putin must cease his attacks on Ukraine and stop the war that he started. But Putin has no intention of ending the war, and we do not have any quick and easy ways to influence him. We see no proof that Putin is interested in real peace.
