Today is my 52nd birthday and I'm noting the occasion by taking the risk of asking for help. gofund.me/1ce220fe

I had a really productive conversation with Jude here, and wanted to thank him for consulting me on the dominance feminist perspective. So many others are satisfied to shy away from the crux of the matter and avoid the sex-antagonism at the heart of 'crises' of masculinity. Give it a read!

I made a silent puppet film about Godzilla vs. Paul Bunyan. (thank you to @iamchubbybunny.bsky.social for Japanese translations and @okaywolf.ink for clanky piano!!)

Whilst we await the cover reveal for THE DEAD WITHHELD, can I interest you in some bloggery about it and perhaps a playlist and the pre-order link? www.ldlewiswrites.com/news-updates...

"You know, as an example, red lead was used to make cheddar... A can of coffee could be coffee, but it could be ground bone, or charred shells, or dirt." Deborah Blum on our bad food past -- and how to avoid it being our future: buttondown.com/theswordandt...

i realize the title is a bit counterintuitive but the answer is that you cannot as an individual guarantee your food is safe. we can, as a collective, push back HARD on dismantling food safety regulations, and put pressure on an unpopular administration to keep our food from killing us.

Just a little FYI: if you're looking for a good May Day/International Workers Day film to watch, Salt of the Earth (1954) is hard to beat. Based on the 1951 Empire Zinc strike in New Mexico, the film includes some of the workers as actors and was one of the first fully independent US films.

let me try to spare ppl some pain today, and repeat something I said in a talk on resistance to Trump last week: you do not have to take advice on how to protest from those who are not themselves willing to protest (and in the NYT ed board’s case, who see disciplining protestors as part of the job)

Happy May 1st. The value of your labor belongs to you and the actions of the state are best understood as as a coordinated effort to distract you from this. The state fears an organized and unified proletariat like it fears death and rightly so. Power to the workers and power to the people

On this day in 1886, Lucy Parsons, a Black anarchist born into slavery, marched with her children at the front of one of the largest labor marches in US history, as workers across the country demanded the eight hour day. Two days later, striking workers were shot.

ICYMI Belgium listened to sex workers' needs and decriminalised sex work! Criminalisation of sex work creates vulnerability and increases violence. These laws were brought in while increasing sentences for rape and centring consent within the law.

Johnson, VT is my favorite town in all of Vermont. The community is unlike anything I’ve ever encountered. This video came up on my FYP - they moved the library because it was flooded twice! Jaw dropping ingenuity in the face of climate change.

I wish people would stop using "substack" as a synonym for "newsletter." I mean, please, if you're not going to leave substack the platform, at least use the correct word for what you're writing.

Texans, we REALLY need your help. HB3225 would restrict young people from library collections and SB412 would be used to threaten and intimidate librarians and teachers. This thread has EASY steps you can take to fight both.

Last day to apply!

we do actually need regular reminders like this that russia's war in ukraine is incredibly evil

Please highlight this story. ICE stormed into the wrong house, trashed the place, and made women/girls stand outside in the rain in their underwear. ICE also stole phones, laptops, and cash savings from the family, who moved to OKC two weeks ago. kfor.com/news/local/w...

I assume the Liberals will just print this up on large cards this morning and post them just outside of every polling station in the country.

I'm gonna be real: I find this just... wildly icky on multiple fronts. For a publisher to make professional publicity material that talks about the fanfic origins of a book they're publishing, when it is Harry Potter, essentially promoting HP (while profiting off it???) at this moment of all times?

The mods of r/ChangeMyView shared the sub was the subject of a study to test the persuasiveness of LLMs & that they didn't consent. There’s a lot that went wrong, so here’s a 🧵 unpacking it, along with some ideas for how to do research with online communities ethically. tinyurl.com/59tpt988

#WriterBeware this is repulsive (alt text: Richard Chizmar mocks and downplays the seriousness of paying past due royalties to Todd Keisling, calling him a "funny little man" and blaming other members of the Cemetery Dance staff for not doing the numbers when they were done in February.

I hope people read this and understand what a devastating effect the hate that came up from Vermonters protesting civil unions had on a lot of us who were young and doubled down on hiding any queer parts of ourselves till we had breakdowns.

Been dealing with some unpleasant and unexpected financial expenses. While I will not see residuals from this year's sales until next year, please, buy my book with @willowcatelyn.bsky.social . If not for yourself, somebody you know. www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/725695...

Fun fact: there's countless folk songs about the lives and welfare of workers being exploited by business leaders who hoard all the wealth while others suffer, that are just as relevant today! youtu.be/W0o4q6XDjVw (Just the Songs is live on Youtube) #TheLongestJohns #FolkMusic #Workers #JoinAUnion

I've been having some fun lately drawing all the characters from the Hobbit.

The Hand is a stop-motion masterpiece -- and one of the very best animated films. Director Jiří Trnka made it as a protest, attacking the dictatorship that used him as its pawn. But the film has more layers than many realize, as we discover: animationobsessive.substack.com/p/revisiting...

ppl are discussing the illogic of transphobes declaring that "trans women are men" but also "trans men are men" with regards to sex-segregated spaces. I think these reactions make more sense once you recognize their obsession imagined purity & contamination: juliaserano.medium.com/penises-priv...

It's a new day and a turning point for our campaign. Tonight during Knicks Game 3 — and for the next five days — we will be introducing our vision for an affordable New York on television. Andrew Cuomo is running for Eric Adams' second term. I'm running for you.

I'm glad someone finally fucking said it, because implict to this whole conversation is erasure of the fact that trans women are capable of being harmed or assaulted, and erasure of the fact that these exclusionary laws don't just make us "feel bad", but actively endanger us.
