Been on a massive Phil Upchurch kick the last few weeks. Donny Hathaway, Bob Dylan, George Benson, Quincy Jones, Curtis Mayfield, Howlin’ Wolf—Upchurch’s versatile playing fits in no matter who he’s with. Here he is on John Schneider’s Soundboard in 1985 demonstrating the beauty of “Upchurch-ism.”

This is the most wretched campaign of deliberate, explicit persecution the United States has perpetrated against a minority group in decades. Many of the most important people in politics and journalism are busying themselves trying to figure out how little to say or do about it.

Somebody at my recycling center is getting exasperated.

when I was younger I thought the subplot of Ender’s Game in which Ender’s siblings shitpost themselves into running the world was the least realistic part of the book I am coming around to the idea that it was by far the most realistic

Friday nights used to be Go to the Video Store Night and there was a whole strategy and timing to it and our entire society has broken down since we replaced it with Try to Figure Out What to Stream by Yourself While Also Scrolling on Your Phone y/n?

William Friedkin’s 1985 cop thriller is noteworthy not only for its 80s aesthetics and hard-hitting action, but for its cold, dark heart. It’s currently streaming on Amazon Prime: crookedmarquee.com/classic-corn...

Donald Trump is ending the national database of police misconduct

don't think we can overstate how insidiously Hanania/SlateStarCodex-style race science has penetrated the Substack centrist brain trust (see also, a certain Bloomberg columnist with a newsletter)

history is wild, for eg. if Pythagoras hadn't successfully taken credit for a theorem he had nothing to do with, he'd be remembered as a skeevy af cult leader who claimed he could speak to animals, time travel, killed an asp with a venomous bite and insisted that fava beans are literally evil

Good morning friends. It’s happening. Folks are swarming townhalls of Republican MoCs blistering them over Musk/Trump regime’s brutal cuts. This should also send a message to @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social & all House Dems ▶️ not one vote for Musk/Trump’s budget. #resist

Andrew Cuomo: A Guy Who Sucks

RIP to the great Voletta Wallace. I remember reading @justintinsley.bsky.social's book and sitting in awe of how hard she strived, as a Jamaican immigrant to New York, to shape a better life for her family, and how faithfully she stewarded her son's legacy www.gainesville.com/story/news/2...

god bless jerry butler. god bless violetta wallace. may they both rest in peace.

seems pretty definitive when even a National Front type just calls out the salute for what it is

NEW: Judge warns Trump appointees not to try to evade his order halting a blanket pause to foreign-aid payments, but stops short of holding officials in contempt. Minutes later, aid groups file new evidence Rubio may have violated court order www.politico.com/news/2025/02...

A lot of people mistake their received impressions for actual reality but Christ almighty this level of delusion by MattY is spectacular

one really interesting thing about congestion pricing is that Trump basically said “I am killing congestion pricing right now”, got a friendly puff piece in the New York Post, and then every other media outlet went along with it even though it turned out he actually did not kill congestion pricing

NEW: Retailers like Walmart and Target that have rolled back their DEI efforts have seen a big drop in foot traffic, while Costco, a company that continues to invest in DEI, has seen more foot traffic. While correlation doesn't equal causation, still intriguing. www.retailbrew.com/stories/2025...
