There are only 5 days left, but if you want to give input to the UK government's proposed changes to allow AI companies to train on copyright data unless rights holder opt out, you can do so here. Deadline 20 Feb 2025. ipoconsultations.citizenspace.com/ipo/consulta... I did, naturally.

Orwell's 1984 is a seriously great book. So much in it. So many concepts. I'm taking so many notes #booksky

How to always, punctually, with no exception, be on the wrong side. Good job Italy.

Really great day today visiting the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics at the University of Chicago. Gave a seminar talk and chatted with students, postdocs, and faculty about lots of exciting research. More meetings & a public talk tomorrow!

This sucks big time

Remember when Apple was more surprise-and-delight than grinding-down-indies, rent-seeking, and sucking-up-to-Trump? This video is definitely surprise and delight. sixcolors.com/link/2025/02... Via Jason Snell. Want.

NEW: Hannah is my ex-step daughter. And when I was in middle of my Cambridge Analytica investigation, she had a stalker. Stalkers. For years. A whole cast of characters making her life hell. In 2021, I approached the BBC: could we try & nail the perpetrator(s)? 1/ podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/s...

I heard Charlotte Owen (the aide Johnson appointed to the Lords) on BBC R4. She shouldn't have been appointed. The Lords shouldn't exist. But... Her bill banning deep-fake porn is good. And she sounded very serious and committed. People can surprise you. www.glamourmagazine.co.uk/article/data...

It's out! It's an actual book you can actually buy! If you like data projects, and want to try some real-world ones with all the real challenges and obstacles, this book might be for you! I hope you like it!!! #dataBS #datasky

I’ve been trying Kagi on and off. It’s a paid web search engine, available at ‪kagi.com‬ and as a default search option in the Orion web browser. It’s good and has found a few things for me I couldn’t find with Mojeek or DDG. (Google hasn’t found anything for me for years.) Well worth trying out.

Heads up! All supplemental materials for Data Management in Large-Scale Education Research can be found on this OSF page: osf.io/e5g6t/ The repo includes materials such as: ✔️ Data mgmt planning checklists ✔️ Documentation templates ✔️ Example R code from the book #EduSky #DataBS

Spot on from @labourlewis.bsky.social. Green growth is code for growth at any cost…as long as it doesn’t involve Europe. Only @ed-miliband.bsky.social is serious. I’m a Labour MP – but the government’s ‘growth’ mission reeks of panic — Clive Lewis, The Guardian www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Ok I've finally managed to publish this easy piece on #probability, going through the Bernoulli - give me any feedback, tell me how it is, let me know if you find any mistakes! martinapugliese.github.io/excursus/pro...

Resonant words from the Auschwitz Memorial today: “Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers. Hatred was gradually developed. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through dehumanization & violence to systematic & industrial murder. “Auschwitz took time.”

Fantastic! Knowledge you didn’t know you needed to have!!!

Good news: Changing Linux code could cut data center energy use by 30%, researchers claim — Matthew Gooding, Data Center Dymamics (via /.) www.datacenterdynamics.com/en/news/chan... More info: uwaterloo.ca/news/media/c... Even better, it’s in the latest kernel (6.13).

Modern Python supports _type hinting_, which allows the language to be made less dynamic and less powerful by declaring types, and _faux_ circular dependencies to be introduced, all without providing any run-time type checking or performance increases.

Bruce Schneier perfectly articulates something I’ve been thinking about: AI Mistakes Are Very Different from Human Mistakes www.schneier.com/blog/archive... “...it’s not the frequency or severity of AI systems’ mistakes that differentiates them from human mistakes. It’s their weirdness.”

The Global News Podcast from the BBC World Service is invariably excellent. This morning’s special edition was entirely devoted to extreme weather, and is well worth a listen: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p... It has the added bonus of not mentioning the inauguration and barely DJT himself.

The irony. 🧪 #science #MedSky

Microjoy: downloading a paper and finding there’s an option to download a BibTeX citation for it right there (even if some of the choices of citation keys are baffling; easily fixed!)

Air pollution has dropped significantly in #Paris in the last 15 years. Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social’s leadership has traded car space for green space, safe bike space, kid space.. and traded pollution for people. Good trade.

Nice-but-depressing multi-time series look at how our climate is being affected over recent decades.
