I can't speak for anyone else, But a thing that I am finding is really helping me to get through all this nonsense is helping others. It can be something small- sharing a job ad with a fired colleague, looking over a resume- or something larger. But helping others helps me.

Several years ago I spent some time in the Revillagigedo Islands. This is video from an aggregation of white tip Reef sharks at Roca Partida. The scientific question that piques my interest is - where do they pup? There is no obvious nursery area anywhere around here. youtu.be/xJWkGbGNuSk πŸ§ͺ

Cool coverage of a new undergrad-led paper from my lab! #SciComm www.popsci.com/environment/...

Happy to give the seminar!

The National Science Foundation (NSF) funded my PhD research thru an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship to learn how snakeheads, walking catfish, plecos, & other invasive fishes are able to spread between bodies of water in unusual ways. 1/2

The US has the best managed fisheries in the world, overall (sure, some of our fisheries aren’t perfect, but most are great, especially compared to elsewhere in the world). That is a fact that makes me to be proud to an American fish researcher, angler, and local fish eater. 1/9

Fun blog post on a new snakehead slime project out of my lab! Thanks for the write-up @matthewlmiller.bsky.social! blog.nature.org/2025/02/16/t... πŸŸπŸ‘πŸ™

Here’s a fun podcast episode on suckermouth armored catfishes (plecos) that gives a shout out to one of my more obscure research projects on how plecos β€œreffle” to move across land, along with a shout out to @matthewlmiller.bsky.social science journalism on the project! @usfws.bsky.social 🐟

Only 3 days left to submit an application to this summer's #REU - BLINKS program! We're excited to have so many awesome projects lined up.☁️ Diversity VALUED! Please pass this along and check out our website for project descriptions and application info: fhl.uw.edu/research/sum... πŸ§ͺ Please boost!

Here’s my next tattoo inspired by my own research! This one is based off of the first project that I ever published, which I led as an undergrad student, studying the amphibious behaviors, terrestrial orientation, and terrestrial locomotion of intertidal mummichog fish! #SciComm πŸŸπŸ‘πŸ πŸ¦‘

Does anyone have a nice relative short (less than 20 minutes) video that serves as a good intro to birding? We have a snow day last minute and I need to pivot to an auto tutorial birding activity rather than a guided field trip? πŸ¦πŸ¦… 🦒 πŸ”πŸ£πŸ§πŸ¦†πŸ₯πŸͺΏπŸ¦‰πŸ¦β€β¬›πŸ“πŸ¦œπŸ¦ƒπŸ¦€πŸ¦©πŸ¦β€πŸ”₯

Tadpole Madtom (Noturus gyrinus) is a small catfish species native to eastern US & southern CA. While its populations are overall healthy, it is at risk in some states, including PA, where it is critically endangered due to habitat alteration & the introduction of non-native species. 1/3 #SciComm 🐟🐑

Was scrolling through my camera roll looking for examples of street art with a clear message to put into this talk for the weekend, and lmao

With my lake being frozen for over a month, this has probably been the longest I’ve gone without fishing in about a decade… and I took me two outings to get a single bite but it feels good to get the rust off with the shortest, fattest 5.5 lb bass I’ve ever seen! 🐟🎣

Our collaboration on Blue Catfish Reproduction on the Delmarva Peninsula/Chesapeake Bay is out! Long story short, invasive blue catfish reproduction generally occurs in late April-early June. #SciComm πŸ™πŸŸπŸ  pubs.usgs.gov/publication/...

So excited to share this project that one of my brilliant undergrads did as first author for @sicbjournals.bsky.social! It was a wacky one that involved a lot of kayak fishing for snakeheads (& I accidentally won a snakehead tournament, whoops). (1/3) #SciComm πŸ πŸ¦‘πŸŸπŸŽ£ academic.oup.com/icb/advance-...

I don’t have a definitive source on this yet but it looks like NSF review panels have been canceled. Sixty-some years ago, Eisenhower transformed higher education because he viewed a science education gap as the single greatest threat to national security. This is absolutely an act of sabotage.

Nothing says β€œefficiency” like grinding everything to a halt and firing people. Given my MS students that are doing important research on invasive species (I.e., blue catfish) are funded by federal grants, this will interrupt & potentially ruin very important research to save the Chesapeake Bay.

Redear Sunfish (Lepomis microlophus) are native to southeastern US, but due to their popularity as a sportfish, they have been introduced widely around the US and the world (including to Delmarva). They primarily feed on snails, which is why they are frequently called "Shellcrackers" 1/4 πŸ‘πŸŸπŸ™#SciComm
