This week's People's Health Briefing covers Influenza Hitting ‘High Severity’ in US and Texas Measles Cases Climbing as data from CDC lags. Also, how measles wipes out prior immunity, as well as important updates to the MMR vaccine schedule. www.youtube.com/live/McIG7zo...

H5N1 confirmed in 4 black rats in Riverside County, CA, which had recent poultry outbreaks. "The latest bird flu discoveries come as the USDA is trying to rehire bird flu experts that the agency recently fired as part of cost-cutting based on recommendations from...DOGE."

There are estimated to be more than 300 people with measles infections in west Texas right now, cases have shown up in eastern New Mexico, and there are new cases in New Jersey, Alaska and at least a couple southeastern states. This is a national problem and there is no federal infrastructure for it

No word from CDC as Texas measles outbreak continues to grow. The CDC measles page hasn't been updated since Feb 7 so this outbreak isn't reflected. No MMWR report, no Health Advisory, no nothing. We are on a dangerous path.

Pay Attention #medsky! Patients are afraid to show emotion in front of doctors for fear of being labeled and misdiagnosed. This, despite the fact that they're coming to us out of the need to address conditions that are frightening, painful, and/or affect their quality of life.

We appear to be seeing an uptick of devastating flu-associated Acute Necrotizing Encephalitis in children this season. We've had reports here in No. Cal. Others out of Boston. We're piecemealing things together because there's no active surveillance for ANE, and CDC can't communicate with partners.

The City of Fremont, California votes 6-1 to ban camping on public & private - including residential - land for >3 nights. Also prohibits anyone from “permitting, aiding, abetting or concealing” camping on those lands. A violation is punishable by a fine of up to $1000 or up to 6 mos in jail.

Backwards! Hospitals are getting slammed with flu, covid and RSV, so *visitors* are restricted while masks are optional. If we really care about stopping transmission, we should require masks. Where are all the people who were screaming about "heartless" visitor restrictions and "lockdowns?!"

Instead of the head-in-sand approach, we should: ✅️ clean indoor air ✅️ have sick people stay home ✅️ create remote options to use during outbreaks ✅️ provide free KN95s and encourage their use, esp during times of high virus circulation ✅️ provide free flu/covid tests

"In the past week, a swath of schools and even entire school districts have announced closures in at least 10 states. These include Texas, Ohio, Oklahoma, Georgia, Virginia, and Tennessee, among others." Where's all the outrage about "learning loss?" 🤔

Alarming. Three teenagers (14, 15, and 17) from San Diego County in under a month have died from flu A. We're generally most concerned with extremes of age, but of course it can get anyone. Please protect yourselves and your loved ones - this is a bad flu season, and it isn't over yet. 🙏🏽

Something tells me this will become more commonplace. Growing Measles outbreak in a Texas county with very low vaccination rates. Case investigations are ongoing, exposed infants are being treated preemtively, and more and more people are at risk. kffhealthnews.org/news/article...

CDCs MMWR is back, sort of. Two "Notes from the Field," brief reports with incomplete info, no recommendations or conclusions. These are about Wildfires. Looking back over the past year, there's never been a week without at least 1 full report, outbreak report, etc. 3 H5N1 papers still unpublished.

I would like to request that my life be relocated to less interesting times, please.

Very unwelcome news! H5N1 genotype D1.1 6 identified in 6 Nevada dairy herds. This is NOT the strain that's been circulating on farms so far. It's the strain that sent a 13yo girl in Canada to ICU, and that killed a man in Louisiana. Very bad time for a public health comms blackout.

Finally, effective non-opioid pain medication! Similar effectiveness to hydrocodone/acetaminophen (formerly sold as Vicodin), Suzetrigine worked faster, had fewer side effects, and because it acts peripherally and not on brain/spinal cord, it doesn't carry the risk of addiction that opioids do.

I still refer back to this article. Understanding what makes people susceptible to mis/disinformation is critical, as it's one of the greatest threats to public health of our time. Diseases we've nearly eradicated could make a comeback, endangering us all.

Gratitude to @kff.org for downloading government data files that have since been taken down. Not only will they be able to preserve what was there, they will also be able to see what changes were made if and when the information comes back on line. 🙏🏾

It’s easier to get folks to believe “alternative facts” if airing real facts is forbidden. Straight out of authoritarian playbook. This is just the beginning. They are testing the waters. We must protest and resist now.

Speaking of healthcare. Let's make @bsky.app the platform that fights misinformation. Some great follows are @drsusanoliver.bsky.social @jsm2334.bsky.social @therealtruther.bsky.social Let's get them more followers and engagement than other platforms and let health science accounts find a home

Every week, I check the CDC's Mortality and Morbidity Weekly Report. This week for the first time in its 60 years it was not published on schedule. American healthcare workers all over the country are less informed about health crises that affect their patients. CDC led reports matter a 🧵

13 yo girl in Canada became seriously ill with H5N1 that had a mutation also found in the H5N1 infecting the man who died in Louisiana. "This child needed a lot of support, basically the maximum amount of respiratory support that we're able to provide in a modern ICU"

One of my friends has a grant from the #FDA to look at disparities in clinical trial research and just submitted a manuscript with the findings. She was told today by the collaborators from the #FDA to rescind it. #Censorhip has started, we are living in authoritarian government.

For the first time in decades, no Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report from CDC under the new administration's health communications freeze. Normally would've been posted yesterday 1/24. Who is this benefiting? Hoping this is truly temporary. 🙏🏽
