New Post! I wrote about hockey's drinking culture, the shift away from alcohol among younger players and fans, and a hockey game I played with a very high goalie:

It seems like we've all kind of settled on saying "We all know plus/minus is a flawed stat. Anyway, here's his plus/minus..."

For those new to Nordiques Fan Corner, I thought I'd recap the writing I've done so far. My first post was a manifesto: can we preserve the best traditions of hockey, without also having a bunch of terrible, regressive opinions? And what can hockey teach us about our strange political moment?

Just a tiny bit of cold, clean air in my face--European cold, not Canadian cold--and mentally I'm back in Montreal. Amazing how evocative temperatures can be.

It’s been almost 30 years since the NHL left Quebec City. After the PWHL’s sold out crowd on Sunday, could a women’s hockey team be the most likely way to bring back pro hockey to the city? www.nytimes.com/athletic/607...

New post alert! A history and philosophy of advanced stats in hockey, from Isaac Newton to Bob Probert. How should we interpret statistical information about the game, and why does it matter?

For new followers: Nordiques Fan Corner is a writing project in which I explore hockey politics, my own intense nostalgia, and the unfolding story of culture in the 2020s--through the lens of ice hockey fandom. Follow along below: nordiquesfancorner.substack.com/p/manifesto-...

Making hockey sentimental

This is honestly a great idea. There should be a more explicit system of accountability for refs, including suspensions, fines, etc. Players work very hard to be good at their jobs, and suffer the consequences if they don't. Refs should be treated no differently.

I wrote about Swiss hockey, the shared experience of cheering for a team, and how beer league hockey is not very much like NHL hockey: nordiquesfancorner.substack.com/p/nfc-on-the...

Got a big essay coming up on the history of advanced stats in hockey...does anyone have reading recommendations?

Regarding the NHL 4 Nations Face-Off: The four teams will only wear one jersey in the tournament -- no home/away. Which means we are getting an aesthetically awesome matchup in that USA vs. Canada game. 💙❤️

I wrote about a game between Bern and Geneva, whether hockey is "fractal," and a much-needed dose of humility for my beer league dreams. Read more and subscribe for free if you like this sort of thing: nordiquesfancorner.substack.com/p/nfc-on-the...

I hate to take the bait... Ross Douthat of the NYT writes that Canada should consider Trump's "invitation" to join the US--because 1) Canada would have more geopolitical heft as part of the US, and 2) that Canada's national project is reducible to knee-jerk anti-Americanism. Let's consider... 1/

The Columbus Blue Jackets being in a wild card slot more than halfway through the NHL season is such a feel-good story. And we could use more of those this year.

Celebrini, on why it was important for him to use Pride tape on Pride Night: "I just wanted to show my support and tape my stick. That doesn't really say a lot, but just kind of supporting the cause."

Cutter Gauthier is totally allowed to do whatever he wants, but it's simply not credible for him to pretend that he has no idea what this is about. The narrative is, in fact, completely within his control, and he could put this to rest in 30 seconds if he decided to do so.
