Cartodere bifasciata, a small beetle found on Box at West Newton yesterday, along with an even smaller unidentified springtail.

A lichenicolous fungus on Parmelia sulcata, seen at West Newton at the weekend. I've not managed to get any conidia or other structures out of it so far, any ID suggestions @robyaxley.bsky.social ?

The Heronries Census 2024 Summary Report is out now! Read it online 👉 www.bto.org/herons-r... Thank you to our Regional Organisers & volunteers for taking part in the Census! It would not be such a long-running success without the dedication of our great supporters! #Ornithology #WorldWildlifeDay

Do you use Darwin Tree of Life (DToL) genomes for your work or grant applications? If so, can you please fill out this form? docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F... We are gathering info on how DToL genomes are used. It will help us raise money to continue producing publicly available high-quality genomes.

Current project: Norfolk Pseudoscorpion guide. Drawing specimens down microscope for labelled diagrams and putting records on maps. Missing photos/specimens for several species so will be a while before it's finished. Map shows all current records, pre (yellow) & post (red) 2000. Not many.

Excited to see how this goes. I helped the Plantlife team dig in the thalli…

Last month I collected a few Norway Spruce cones from Brandon C.P., and today this moth emerged. It appears to be Cydia strobilella, which was known from Brandon in Morley's day but appears to have not been seen in that area for 90 years or so (www.suffolkmoths.co.uk/micros.php?b...)

Yesterday 31 Pied Wagtail in ploughed field along Wickhampton Road, including this white one.

The first UK Naturalist starter park is now officially full go.bsky.app/DeyPecR - with spring just around the corner it seems like a good time to start a second one, so hit me up with suggestions. Anyone who posts primarily about UK (non-birdy) nature is welcome.

Some small fungi from the edge of Norwich Henningsomyces candidus, Polycephalomyces tomentosus on Trichia varia, Ecninosphaeria canescens, Cistella dentata

Still time to book yourself in for tomorrow’s (free) online #bookwilding with @nicolawriting.bsky.social and me. See you then? 🌱 #naturewriting #wildservice #righttoroam #nature #activism

First field trip today in search of Bankesia conspurcatella. Unfortunately, no adult males but we did find some cases. I’d appreciate any input on ids and/or possibilities. I’m wondering about conspurcatella, Dahlica triquetrella and Luffia lapidella #norfolkmoths #teammoth

This baby harvest mouse and this baby natterjack want you to know that on 13th March at 1830 I’m interviewing The Bishop of Norwich in Holt Church. Join us to learn about the Church of England’s work on nature, climate and environment. And because 🐭 🐸 say so. www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/nature-and...

Today I have 'graduated' to being a national verifier for Orthopteroid insects on iRecord. Please do record your observations when the new season gets underway. In the meantime, there is a bit of a backlog to be worked through (c. 20,000 records) so please bear with me..! #ukorthoptera

A couple of Cladonias from Holkham dunes. C.arbuscula and C. gracilis. There were about ten species present, although Cladonias are notoriously difficult to identify and I haven’t worked them all out yet.

I've updated the guide to Harvestmen on the Norfolk and Norwich Naturalists' Society website. Leiobunum species A has been added & there are changes to Dicranopalpus ramosus/caudatus reflecting the difficulties of separating these 2 species. norfolknaturalists.org.uk/wp/publicati... #Harvestmen

The scale insect Pseudococcus longispinus (photo in last repost) is illustrated at fig.12 (top) in this plate from Robert Newstead's Monograph of the British Coccidae, Ray Society 1903

The very first Lichenomphalia umbellifera lichens I found. I think you can see why I lost my mind over them and am still obsessed with them. Distance shot below ⬇️ #fungifriends #fungi #mycology #naturephotography

I have found one of the best organisms I have ever seen. Hololepta plana, which I have christened the Stupid Flat Idiot (intended affectionately, as one might refer to a sibling). Halfway between a beetle and a credit card. A dizzyingly wafer-thin beetle - like it's been run over in a cartoon.

A bit puzzled by these pustules on the lobe edges of Peltigera ?hymenina, any help please…#lichens

Missing the fungal forays of Autumn? Winter and Spring offer a myriad of wonderful fungal species in their prime! Frequently overlooked are the ascomycetes, commonly called cup fungi as they form cup-like fruiting bodies named apothecia. Here are some of our favourite species to look out for ✨🍄🧵

My first postcard printed from artwork created for my new book Sketching Nature, which will be available 6th May. Primula vulgaris ….. flowering now! How timely of it:) one of my favourites

First day on here! How do I get added to ento and science starter packs? I offer a beautiful psyllid (Creiis longipennis) emerging from its lerp and nymph, I guess 😍

The @norfolknats.bsky.social species guide to the Psyllids of Norfolk has now been updated with 2024 data (251 records of 32 species - thanks to all who have submitted records). There are also new photos for Cacopsylla visci & Trioza chenopodii. norfolknaturalists.org.uk/wp/wp-conten...

Just added the recent and surprising discovery of Water-lettuce to my Flora of East Anglia website. If you've not visited my site yet, you might find it a useful identification aid for your local plants - even if you live outside East Anglia. You can find it at: webidguides.com

If you're birding deer-rich areas or doing @btobirds.bsky.social heathland surveys, you need be #LymeDeiseaseAware! I contracted Lyme disease from a tick bite in Thetford Forest in February 1997. #LymeDisease season is already on us, its not just summer. #birdingWales #birdingScotland #UKbirding

On a recent family visit to Banham Zoo I noticed that some of the plants in the tropical house appeared to have scale insects on them. I think these lovely long 'tails' make this Pseudococcus longispinus, which seems to have been introduced around the world on a variety of plants.

I've just updated my Concise Guide to Norfolk Harvestmen. It covers the 25 species recorded in Norfolk in an easy to use format that is ideal downloaded onto a smart phone to use in the field. Follow the link on my website arthropedia.co.uk/harvestmen-2/

I found this Sulphur Bark Moth, Esperia sulphurella on Saturday (15th Feb). There appears to only be a single February record on the @norfolkmoths.bsky.social website (www.norfolkmoths.co.uk/micros.php?b...), so depending on the date of that one it might be a new earliest county record.

If you are a #science #teacher in #Norfolk or #Suffolk you will want to attend this #CPD event @johninnescentre.bsky.social on 6th March 9-12:30 for inspiration, knowledge and ideas #primary and #secondary strands www.jic.ac.uk/event/norfol... #bursary available

This appears to be a #WaterVole which this #GreyHeron caught and tormented! Not sure if the heron eventually ate the poor struggling water vole as it flew off with it in the end #WarhamCamp #NorfolkBirding #UKBirding

Having seen a Grey Heron repairing its nest at Whitlingham yesterday, it seemed a good time to break out some Heron Ale. My first beer with heron in the name, although Gone Fishing (www.green-jack.com/product-page...) has a nice one on the label. #birdbeer

Announcement time! MoffStuff! is pleased to now be sending donations towards the upkeep and running of NorfolkMoths.co.uk To celebrate, you can now get a special edition design with the marvelous Marsh Carpet moth, in all your fave merch. Check it out: www.moffstuff.co.uk/designs/norf... #teammoth

This smart Pintail x Wigeon hybrid (Pingeon? Wigtail?) was showing well at Keyhaven today. Now present for its 4th winter. #ukbirding #patchbirding

The Red-necked Grebe, present for about a month, appeared to be absent from Whitlingham today. Highlights were a Marsh Harrier flyover, the wintering Caspian Gull and a Grey Heron back on one of last years nests #NorfolkBirding
