Against a backdrop of political tensions, Canada’s 4 Nations win was bigger than just hockey. New for ⁦@TheAthletic⁩, my final column from 4 Nations in Boston. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6150708/2025/02/21/4-nations-face-off-canada-champions/?source=emp_shared_article

Jon Cooper says this win means a lot for Canada. Not just for their team but for their country. A lot of national pride in his voice as he described what this meant.

Post game interviews for Reinhart and Bennett. Reinhart has a Molson in hand, eh?

Team Canada keeps its best-on-best event win streak alive. Champs in: 2025 4 Nations 2016 World Cup of Hockey 2014 Sochi Olympics 2010 Vancouver Olympics

Connor McDavid, Golden Goal, Team Canada wins it in overtime.

Brady Tkachuk robbed by Jordan Binnington, who is channeling his 2019 Cup final Game 7 self here at TD Garden

Binnington absolutely stones Matthews

Just like Vancouver in 2010, 2-2 going to overtime. Stanley Cup playoff overtime rules here at 4 Nations for the championship game. They play forever, 5 on 5. No shootout.

Marner joins McDavid and Point on this shift.

You can feel the tension in this building. Reminds me a lot of how it felt in Vancouver in 2010 in gold medal game. Both teams trying to minimize mistakes. Nothing fancy.

Team USA loaded up with Matthews-Eichel-B. Tkachuk on the final shift of the period. Wonder if we see more of that in third period of if that was situational with the offensive zone faceoff late in the period.

What a play by Mitch Marner to set up Sam Bennett, 2-2. Great patience by Marner.

Larkin barking at Binnington after that play. The intensity in this game is through the freakin' roof

Trochek trips Bennett right in front of the ref, first penalty of the game. The dangerous Canadian PP gets its first crack

Jake Sanderson hammers home the rebound, 2-1 Team USA

Close calls at both ends, Mark. Stone at one end, Jack Hughes at the other

Matthews and Eichel swapped spots, 34 now with the Tkachuk brothers and they score on their second shift together

Brady Tkachuk makes it 1-1, TD Garden erupts.

So cool ⤵️ https://twitter.com/usahockey/status/1892751779701379426

I know Kyle Connor hasn't been at his very best in this event, but I'm not scratching a guy with that kind of talent in a game where one shot, one look, can make the difference.

Already tonight a few examples of Canada having more success on puck retrievals in offensive zone. Canada struggled with that Saturday night. USA blue-liners so adept at getting pucks out quickly but tonight so far Canada has won a few back.

Total seeing-eye shot by MacKinnon. Hellebucyk never tracked it through the bodies. No bad shots in a game like this where both teams will limit chances.

Good amount of Team Canada 🇨🇦 sweaters in the crowd. But they were certainly drowned out by “USA, USA” chants when teams came on the ice for warmup

Big news here, Morrissey out, Harley in https://twitter.com/HockeyCanada/status/1892734336429944923

Quiet here right mow at Toronto Dominion Garden. It won’t be in exactly 2 hours at puck drop.

Team Canada on the ice this morning. 🇨🇦 tonight looking to defend its 15-year run as best on best champs, winners at 2016 World Cup or Hockey, 2014 Olympics and 2010 Olympics.

Team USA head coach Mike Sullivan says everyone outside of McAvoy is available tonight. Game time decision as far as his final lineup makeup.

It’s a great day for hockey, again! 🇨🇦-🇺🇸

Connor McDavid vs. Auston Matthews and the stakes of a 4 Nations final that will be part of a legacy. My latest for ⁦@TheAthletic⁩ ⤵️ https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6147590/2025/02/20/connor-mcdavid-auston-matthews-4-nations-final/?source=emp_shared_article

Spoke with Quinn Hughes’ agent Pat Brisson who said it was a very difficult decision for his client, that Hughes really, really wanted to join Team USA. But reality is he still isn’t medically cleared. And likely wasn’t going to play unless Team USA had another D injury or illness. So a tough [1/2]

Team USA has been informed Quinn Hughes is not travelling here to Boston to join the team. Wasn’t medically cleared. Sounds like Team USA looking at bringing in a couple of other players just as insurance, because of illness going around.

Sullivan anticipates Brady Tkachuk playing tomorrow. Says Brady wasn’t feeling well today (illness). But that injury wise, Charlie McAvoy is their only player out.

Team USA head coach Mike Sullivan says Quinn Hughes not on his way here at the moment but that GM Bill Guerin is still working through it. So still TBD.

Auston Matthews says Monday was something new that popped up injury wise. Not the same as earlier this season. Says he has progressed nicely and feels good now and is ready to go for tomorrow night.

Team Canada has no issue with Quinn Hughes joining Team USA but the NHL again today says it’s status quo as far as Hughes not being able to play unless there’s an injury/illness to another Team USA D.

Brady Tkachuk not on the ice for practice for Team USA. Kyle Connor has a white practice jersey reserved for top 6 forwards

Matthew Tkachuk on the ice for Team USA practice

Two calls in 2017 from Hockey Canada and USA Hockey. How Jon Cooper’s international path could have been different. But he’s where he should be. And according to DeBoer, Tocchet and Cassidy, he’s been a blast to work with. New for ⁦@TheAthletic⁩ ⤵️ [1/2]

So it’s 48 hours to puck drop for the 4 Nations championship game, and multiple sources close to the Quinn Hughes situation say it’s still fluid as to whether he’s coming here to Boston or not.

According to NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, Just like Harley and Canada, Quinn Hughes “is not ‘in’ unless someone else is definitely “out” due to injury or illness. Can’t practice with the team or play until that happens”
