i think it also has a lot to do with the fact that he's realized that he fights FOR love. he fights FOR his loved ones. the kraken isn't a monster, and was NEVER a monster. the kraken was, and still is, a PROTECTOR.

The thing about Our Flag Means Death is that it was delightful original storytelling and we don’t get enough of that anymore. And the storytelling, the imagination, is the whole damn point, and despite cancellation for S3 the showrunner posted S3 fanfic because the storytelling is just fucking fun.
