Our teachers this year: Dan Brooks (@dsbrooks.bsky.social) Dan's research interests span the history & philosophy of the life sciences, concept usage in science & theory in biology. At our school, he'll have a thing or two to say about levels of organization, what they are & where they come from.

Nature research paper: Topological segregation of stress sensors along the gut crypt–villus axis https://go.nature.com/4b4jcpC

Our teachers this year: Nicole Repina (@nrepina.bsky.social) Nicole is using quantitative imaging to study how complex tissue shape can emerge from cell interactions. In Venice, she will be speaking about how we can use imaging for multiscale analysis of multicellular systems.

Our teachers this year: James DiFrisco James is a philosopher of science and theoretical biologist working @crick.ac.uk on the evolution of gene regulatory networks, modularity and pleiotropy, vertebrate gastrulation, and the developmental basis of morphological homology/tissue organization.

📢‼️ Exciting new preprint from the lab by @nikhil-mishra.bsky.social et al, now out on @biorxivpreprint.bsky.social, reveals that the early embryo geometry spatiotemporally patterns zygotic genome activation (ZGA) in zebrafish. 🐟 tinyurl.com/Biorxiv-nmis... Read on to learn more... 👇

*** Registration deadline approaching! Apply to our Summer School in Evolutionary Systems Biology in Venice before MARCH 31, 2025 Reflect on your science in a beautiful and inspiring environment! Food & accommodation for the whole week are included in the course fee. Registration link below.

Thank you for the highlight Rita! We also think these types of tools will open many new avenues, both fundamental and applied. And kudos for the very thoughtful and fair process @naturemethods.bsky.social

What a wonderful initiative in Alma's memory

What if plate tectonics had something to do with development? We found a new framework for dynamic origami in tissue folding in a nerveless animal. Will share thread; but if you are at #cellbio2024, see @cbrannon.bsky.social poster B399 today. Not at ASCB; read www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

📣 Please share: We’re hiring a tenure-track Group Leader in Multicellular Systems to explore the molecular and cellular mechanisms driving the formation, maintenance, or destabilization of tissues, organs and organisms. Apply at: www.fmi.ch/education-ca...

How can randomness be a source of living order? Can physics explain how an embryo emerges out of chaos? In this new paper in Science, Bernat Corominas-Murtra, @ehannezo.bsky.social & cols. show how embryos solve their own Rubik’s cube ist.ac.at/en/news/from...

Entropy is one of those formulas that many of us learn, swallow whole, and even use regularly without really understanding. (E.g., where does that “log” come from? Are there other possible formulas?) Yet there's an intuitive & almost inevitable way to arrive at this expression.

Super excited to announce my new lab at the University of Michigan opening Jan 2025! 🎉We’ll study how cells work together to shape the GI tract, with ties to regeneration & disease. Hiring at all levels—esp. a research tech to help launch the lab! Info: huyckelab.org #DevBio #CellBio #Hiring

Not in the genes.. and not in the hand-clapping either 😉

🚨Hyped to share our new article in @natureportfolio.bsky.social! We show that crocodile head scales develop from compressive folding that arises from constrained skin growth 🐊🔬 Really proud of this one - it's cool 😎 Please read & share! 🧪 @genevunige.bsky.social www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Brilliant!

What a nice perspective on the complexity of multicellular systems. Can a cell be defined by its interactions? We need to move beyond scRNAseq to categorize cell identity.

Membrane tension determines whether you get nibbled or gobbled 🤩

Do you know any cool papers about the multi-level nature of living and ecological systems? Especially papers that don't get enough attention? Modeling, experiments, philosophy, whatever. Let us know. We'd like to discuss them on here. #VeniceEvoDevo

Birds, bugs, microbes, dinosaurs, fungi, plants, algae, fish, rocks and minerals...everything in the natural world is worthy of art. If you post your nature art, nature journals, and/or sci art work and would like to join, please let me know! #sciart #birds go.bsky.app/ASnS846

Where does pattern come from inside cells? in this revised preprint, @aralbright.bsky.social Shows that regionalization of mRNA in a Stentor cell depends on dynein motors and the microtubule cytoskeleton doi.org/10.1101/2023...

🔺🔺🔺RED TRIANGLE ALERT 🔺🔺🔺 Ever wonder how #TADs compare across the tree of life?Look no further & read our Review!!! Find out what genes & 3D chromatin can & can't do in Bacteria! Archeae! Yeast! Plants! Animals! SMCs & RNA-Pol are the only thing they have in common www.nature.com/articles/s41...

I went to this summer school some 10 years ago and it was extremely inspiring. Highly recommended, especially for post-docs or young PIs who want a fresh thinking on evolutionary biology!

Apply to join us in Venice next summer! Check out our wonderful lineup of teachers 👇👇👇
