A movie you’ve watched more than six times, using gifs. (This was tied with the Last Starfighter for my favorite movie as a child.)

I really wish reporters would talk to like one academic before writing stories like this. This guy told not one but two committee chairs to pound sand, then set up his own defense date (complete with videographer!!!), and now is suing because they are not giving him the doctorate he hasn't earned.

They are absolutely going to try to find a way to make sure this money goes to white people, whether it is means testing or, more likely, some sort of redlining (blue/pink lining?)

90's kids who grew up in conservative households hearing about "welfare queens" seeing the GOP offer money to have children

Holy crap. Here are 91 pages of letters that 14 House Democrats just sent to the nine law firms that have paid off Trump to not attack them. Lots of Qs aimed at sorting out if they violated federal bribery/anti-fraud/racketeering laws. min.house.gov/sites/evo-su...

Absolutely blown away to learn yesterday that women did not have the right to vote federally in Switzerland until 1971! In one Canton, they could not vote in regional elections until 1991!

The last guy to show off his military access by sharing classified military intel with unauthorized people on a consumer chat app, Jack Teixeira, will be in prison until 2036

Not sure what my liberal Baptist prayers are worth, but I'm joining my Catholic brothers and sisters in praying for the repose of Papa Francesco's soul.

One of the problems with being a calculating politician with no moral core is that when you miscalculate you look like an enormously out of touch asshole.

Bring back the good old days of one dollar beers and black lung! 🦅

Just as an addendum, you don't need a wacky conspiracy to disagree with a religion. You don't really need a reason at all! You can just dislike it! If you are looking for a reason, there are centuries worth of bad behavior in my religion (much of it ongoing) to choose from.

'Tis the season!

Trump caught on a hot mic talking about sending American citizens to a foreign prison. We don't have any lines left to cross.

What Trump seems to not understand is that he made a deal w/ the median voter: Ignore my extremism and I'll make your middle class comforts cheaper. This moment defies expectation because we are finally encountering a bit of genuine ideology from a mercenary thinker. He truly believes in tariffs.

I realize they're just cancelling everything without looking, but the amount of extremely practical stuff (like the project to modernize Perseus) that is getting shuttered at like 70-90% complete is just baffling. It's like a builder burning down a house right before finishing it out to "save" money

At this rate, EU countries willing to spend a little money could almost certainly facilitate a "brain drain" unlike any America has ever experienced.

If there is a word I've never seen before when reading Jane Austen, more than half of the time it is some variety of carriage.

Dying to know what Loeb this is on Werner Herzog's desk in the 60 Minutes interview. #Ancient #Classics

Obligatory book contract post. My head is spinning a bit from how quickly this went from submission to contract, but I'm delighted that my dissertation will be coming out in WUNTII. My thanks to David Downs, who pushed me to stop tinkering and just submit it, and to the series editor Jörg Frey.

Always fun to receive contributor copies! I am still surprised they let me sneak into such august company, but I am also grateful to have been part of a worthy endeavor.

Every time in my adult life I have had to dig up stumps, I say never again. Every time I need to dig up a stump, I say it won't be that bad. It's not that big. Now that I am the age where I am starting to really feel it, will I finally learn my lesson? Time will tell.

This headline was a rollercoaster for me moving from total, unyielding opposition to "Well, if Neill Blomkamp is doing it then fine."

Columbia University’s immediate submission & betrayal of the core mission of higher education reflects cowardice and capitulation to a government that appears intent on destroying US higher education. Full statement from AAUP President Todd Wolfson: www.aaup.org/news/cowardi...

Whether it’s Michelle Obama pushing Americans to exercise or Donald Trump pushing Americans to buy $114,000 cars from a neo-Nazi, both sides have pushed their agendas on the American people.

"As far as I'm concerned, Marx doesn't exist." For some reason, Foucault delivering this very Foucault line, which, of course, in context means nothing like what it sounds like, made me laugh.

Still a little buggy, but today I used a microcontroller and sensor board from @adafruit.com to make a simple Sip-N-Puff page turner. It shows up to other devices as a Bluetooth keyboard, allowing a disabled user to puff/sip to go forward/back in e-reading apps that support keyboards (most of them).

ICYMI: We identified the operator of one of an anonymous Hitler-quoting self-described ‘Aryan' that is followed by Vice President JD Vance. His name is Geoff Martin, and his father is the president of Trinity Western University, a private Christian college in Canada.

now that’s how you study the Bible

Part 2 of my little DH project involved making a printable stylus and contract tablet. The idea is to make it possible to use cheaply printed wax writing tablets to let students experience ancient writing culture hands on. Doing the test prints now. Last image is the Part 1 print. #BlueskyAncient

BREAKING: Trump will honor himself for saving LA by building a new presidential residence—gilded in a nod to the "Golden State"—on land which recently became available. According to a spokesman, "The Golden House will provide a fitting west-coast companion to the White House." #Parody #Ancient

Given how much conservative politics have infused American Christianity with conspiracism, it is telling that a man who a few years ago literally dressed up as Satan and who, as one of his first acts at "DOGE," sought to gut Christian charity work is now heralded as part of a divine plan to save us.

I guess all the worst of resistance Twitter has migrated to Bluesky finally. I was happy for it to stay on Threads. You can't defeat conspiracist populism with your own version of conspiracist populism. Reality is dire enough.
