Meanwhile, Preston Road is being resurfaced - we know (unlike FB commenters) that these are different budgets, but pretty galling drivers get a smoother ride while those who cycle get nothing (except fewer potholes to dodge whilst also dodging drivers)

Something is going really wrong in North Tyneside if 28 people can put a stop to a cycle lane that connects children’s homes to their school:

In a new blog, we suggest North Tyneside Council gave up on the Preston Rd, North Shields cycle path on the basis of 28 consultation responses which they say they could not reconcile with design issues, on which they sought no further expert design advice: streetlifentyneside.org.uk/2025/02/19/m...

This Cullercoats roundabout is so hostile for pedestrians and cyclists, with necessarily wide arms, all at odd angles, and just one zebra. With a busy shop, the seafront, the metro, and cafes all accessible via the different arms, it really does need a redesign.

Very pleased to see North Tyneside Council are finally starting work repairing this footbridge - with a right of way - that they wanted to demolish. www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-e...

We’ve just uploaded our response to the North East Combined Authority’s Local Travel Plan to our blog, calling for the prioritisation of active travel and public transport infrastructure across the region and highlighting key issues for North Tyneside: streetlifentyneside.org.uk/2025/02/17/o...

Meanwhile, in Whitley Bay, work to repurpose the 1930s era cycle track as part of the new ‘Seafront Sustainable Travel Route’ is underway. Looks like the old concrete is being left in situ, though it will presumably be covered with asphalt. @carltonreid.com

Front Street, Tynemouth. This car can legally be parked here - on what appears itself to be private land, not public highway. But it shouldn’t be able to get there, and only can because a bollard is missing.

Seatonville Road always come to mind for us when we see this kind of transformation of a wide, local road. And perhaps also Preston Road North, where apparently delivering safe cycling infrastructure is too (politically?) difficult to deliver. Any other North Tyneside examples?

Listen to @cyclingadams.bsky.social from @sustrans.bsky.social talk about the tranche of Active Travel England money coming to the NE, and how we’ll need consistent funding for decades to build a region-wide, safe, connected network for walking, wheeling and cycling. www.facebook.com/share/v/14iS...

Good to see the new Northumberland Line advertising for cycle-train journeys. Though if the carriages were really cycle-friendly you might not need a Brompton…

Just a reminder that this is tomorrow night - hope you can make it, and don't forget to share!

Our first social ride of 2025 is this Friday! 🗓️ Friday 31st January ⏰ 18:30 ride 📍 Spanish City plaza > Tynemouth > Whitley Bay via NCN1 🍻 Drinks location tbc by popular demand! 💡 Remember bike lights! We're a friendly bunch, and it's a slow, socially-paced ride so please do pop along! Pls share!

Not too late to comment on the unreliability of the newly-opened, long-awaited inclined lifts at the Tyne Pedestrian and Cycle Tunnels…

It’s difficult to understand how this could happen here without the driver going at excessive speed. It’s also adjacent to a busy junction with a steady flow of pedestrians. Lucky no one was hurt. And, the @chroniclelive.co.uk makes no mention of a driver. www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-e...

“It needs people with courage to stand up &say: ‘This is not in the public interest. I want my kids to be able to get to school under their own steam” If you want to do this in Newcastle, join us, @spaceforheaton.com, @newcycling.bsky.social, @northeastptug.bsky.social or SPACEs for Fenham/Jesmond.

This is the excerpt for this stretch from the plans - difficult to assess the actual widths, but it suggests: - cycle path was planned to be wider than footpath - cycle path was planned to be as wide as each half of the carriageway In reality, neither of those things is true.

This path gets extremely busy with pedestrians - which is great! When it was a shared use path, I avoided riding on it when it was very busy, but still sometimes experienced hostility and once even a threat of physical violence from pedestrians. I hope but doubt this will resolve that conflict.

A better bit (phase 1)

And while we’re here making our Bluesky debut… What’s this about? It’s a two-way 20mph street leading to a newish cycle path, and apparently the council have created - with two painted cycles - a contraflow cycle lane.

This is the newest section of our new “seafront sustainable route” (along the North Tyneside coast). It barely meets LTN1/20 for width (it’s two-way) and there’s only paint separating it from the footpath (hence the pedestrian). Very disappointing.
