One thing I admired Americans for was they provided efficient and effective aid for people around the world. I thought this made America great. The PEPFAR program saved plausibly about 25 million lives and prevented at least 5.5 million babies from being born with HIV. See: pepfarreport.org

Whoever designed the API for numpy.argmax deserves a medal

I'm currently holding the Bayesian inference hammer and everything looks like a nail... and rightly so!

i think that the quality of discourse in the software industry would be a lot better off if programmers were a bit more willing to admit that sometimes we just do stuff because we *like* it, instead of because it's objectively good or bad.

One asymmetrical factor in this trade war. While comparatively few Americans seem to care, they have pissed off *every single Canadian* (except, apparently, surrenderer-in-chief Danielle Smith). Motivated people can accept a lot of pain in the pursuit of what they perceive as a just cause.

Any countries whose scientific research funding bodies are NOT currently under siege by their own national leadership would do very well announcing investments in bringing in foreign research talent right now

Okay. Canadians are all reeling from these tariff announcements. Many people are anxious. What’s the silver lining here? Buy local—grow local business. Grow Canadian industry and new export relationships. What else?

The kids are alright. #Arsenal

Not good news: @who.int just announced a new Marburg outbreak in Tanzania. “As of 11 January 2025, nine suspected cases were reported including eight deaths across two districts – Biharamulo and Muleba. … Results are pending official confirmation.” 🧪 #IDsky www.who.int/emergencies/...

For real though why can’t I do this

The #H5N1 #birdflu virus from a severe case in Louisiana shows it was developing mutations that could help it attach to cells in human respiratory tracts, including a mutation seen in a recent severe case in British Columbia, Canada, the #CDC reported today. www.statnews.com/2024/12/26/c...

Congo outbreak identified: "The mystery has finally been solved. It's a case of severe malaria in the form of a respiratory illness... and weakened by malnutrition." www.reuters.com/world/africa...

New study finds long COVID in children linked to immune cell dysfunction. Neutrophils—key white blood cells that fight infections—are less effective in kids with lingering symptoms like fatigue. This may explain long COVID’s impact on their quality of life. #LongCOVID #Pediatrics 1/

Note to journalists: important to communicate that the stated aim of GBD was to have a massive epidemic (immediately before vaccines became available), and also somehow keep it away from older population at higher risk (which would be about 25% of UK population if take age 60 as cutoff)

It should be clear that acting early in a pandemic is like acting early to put out a fire. Minister Hancock yesterday made similar statements as part of the UK inquiry: 1/ bbc.com/news/live/cm...

I'm learning C after Rust and and it's eye opening to say the least

Why is this human just sitting in the yard? And why is he pointing that thing at me? #birds

Populism is the downfall of liberal democracy. In the end, people are people, aka idiots

The Universe by @astrokatie.com and John Green continues to be one of my favorite listens this year youtu.be/MKX1k0kOYMU?...

Decided just now to start rereading Hitchhikers Guide for the first time in many years and uh

Refactoring a library to payback technical debt is like paying the principal on a fiat loan. All your other libs/infra that depend on the refactored lib is the interest.

With BlueSky finally opening up federation, I think it's time to write up something that explains the whole thing, BlueSky, atproto, the works, in one easy to find place. Just the high level bits, hopefully something that any developer can understand: steveklabnik.com/writing/how-...

Killing prisoners shouldn’t be a legitimate power of government.

this year, 64+ countries (which represent 49% of the people in the world) are holding national elections i wrote some thoughts on my personal blog about my hopes for bluesky this election season, and how newsrooms can reach their audiences in novel and engaging ways here curious to hear thoughts!
