I see these hot takes: "Academia had it coming for [reasons]." The problem with this is that unless you can explain why immigrants, LGBTQ people, minorities, teachers, federal employees, aid workers, health professionals, etc., ALSO had it coming, you'll end up short of a parsimonious explanation.

My latest post/newsletter is now out. It’s a notable one where I share tips about software and services you can use to replace the big tech variants. I know people are looking. axbom.com/big-trek/

@jasonnolan.bsky.social interesting that you mentioned running your own LLMs ... from just 3 hour ago! bsky.app/profile/alan...

A chillingly prophetic scene from Louis Malle's brilliant film My Dinner With Andre (1981). If you've not seen it, ensure you have something to eat and a suitable bottle of wine as it be even more enjoyable. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Dinn... and... scene: www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8v_...

Free speech no longer exists in the US government. For @theatlantic.com I spoke with 12+ federal workers in 6 agencies who said the Trump administration’s actions have led to pervasive self-censorship, even on issues some view as critical to national security. 1/ www.theatlantic.com/technology/a...

after the fascists destroyed education in WW2 the people of Reggio Emilia realized they had to take the education of their children into their own hands. collective, cooperative approaches are needed in the absence of functioning government institutions. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reggio_...

Today’s Oaxaca, Mexico wall art. The world understands.

Good for these federal workers, concerned about the sabotage of a functioning, safe park, for us and for nature. www.sfchronicle.com/outdoors/art...

winter running can be tough, especially when the trail hasn't been plowed or it's covered in ice. yet unlike the summer months when the trail is overcrowded with fair weather types, you can count the number of enduring souls on one hand. winter runners are friendly and supportive - no bluster or ego

It's time to call it. AI is built on a house of cards of intellectual property violations starting with Facebook which is starting to look a lot like a crime scene as held back discovery documents begin to be compelled and unsealed in court. /1

Amen. Alan's advice appeals to sanity versus vanity, especially apropos of the aging athlete. I now have to work 10x as hard to get close to what I could do easily with little training in my 30s. with age = more health issues, chronic injuries and more responsibilities and obligations=reality check.

If you're still updating your Apple software you have to manually go in and turn off Apple Intelligence after every update or it will automatically be on.

"the axis has tilted too far and it is now an absolute imperative that we abandon much of the internet. Social media most definitely needs to be abandoned, as even a place like Bluesky, while charming, is just another echo chamber and time killer." defector.com/we-need-to-g...

the problem with indiscriminate following/engagement is twofold: 1) it lets engagement hackers know you're not paying attention; AND also, more importantly; 2) it alienates serious folks who know the value of *their* time/attention and gives them a million reasons to ignore you *and* your content.

I first shared this article when it came out in 2008. It exposes the roadmap of what is unfolding. www.theguardian.com/technology/2... It is part of the 'Californian ideology': en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cal... Both of these should be required reading for anyone who uses corporate social media.

fear truly IS the mind killer.

From the Applied AI Institute at Concordia. It is alarming to see reputable schools cast AI in some heroic light when in fact the industry has negative and exacerbating effects on every reason listed beneath "Why AI?"

If you’re just tuning in to the flurry of AI agent releases, here’s last summer’s short essay meant both as an explainer and a sketch of some real challenges for us all to take up. www.theatlantic.com/technology/a...

If you haven’t purged your websites and other social media of links to X, it’s worth doing. It helped drive more folks to the spaces I actually participate in (like this one).
