The Christchurch Nurses Chapel looking lovely in the early morning autumn sun. The museum committee are working on project for later in the year on WW2 nurses who served from Chch. I’m tasked with Jforce. Looking forward to showing the chapel museum to @londonnurse.bsky.social who is visiting NZ

Woo hoo I found 1 more copy of Kai Tiaki in the back of the cupboard from 1924- big ad for summer dresses & the relatively new discovery of insulin. Finally the report from 2 nurses who went ‘home’ to study radiography & a garden party in Buckingham Palace completed their trip

Not much time for nursing history content as start of new semester of teaching and all the effort that takes IYKYK - today a workshop for new to New Zealand registered nurses teaching in an ultramodern science building

Would you look at that! It's no longer just a pile of notes, a word doc or a pdf. It's real! @alexchurchill.bsky.social @donaldwin.bsky.social @headofzeus.bsky.social @watsonlittle.bsky.social @iainmacgregor1.bsky.social Preorder: UK: geni.us/RingOfFire USA: barnesandnoble.com/w/ring-of-fire…

With science falling under increasing attack, this medical historian is here to remind people of the power of #vaccines. THREAD🧵 Hard-hitting polio advert from 1958. In the first half of the 20th century, polio was the leading cause of death in children and young adults. 1/7

Highly recommend I usually try and log in even though it’s morning for me

These valuable papers from a survivor of the Marquette sinking which killed 10 #NZANS nurses in #WW1 have been made available on line. They are incredible reading. www.cnmc.org.nz/resources/mu...?

While I am talking about the amazing Christchurch Nurse’s Memorial Chapel here in Christchurch- built to commemorate NZ nurses who died in WW1 - if you are on Insta do give us a follow! I’m on the museum committee & ‘manage’ the social media- see thi there! #HistNursing #nursinghistory

Nice to still be connecting with Twitter pals on here still getting used to this platform. Not much history for me ATM as day job starting academic year earlier than usual has speeded it up! But the nurse chapel museum committee are working on some great WW2 nursing content I’ll be posting soon

Congratulations to Tamsin on her outstanding achievement for 2024 for #WomenInRed, making #Wikipedia a better place. @wikimediaaotearoa.bsky.social

A great final #HistNursing journal review from my private collection- this one Jan 1928 dealing with reciprocity with UK now they have registration. A great ad for Glax-ovo for nervous disorders - we know Vit D is protective for cognitive decline pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC61….

Todays #HistNursing Kaitiaki NZ nursing journal post is April 1927, #WW1 still evident both in work being done in Canada with probably refugee immigrants by NZ nurses & the current state of the NZANS - & an ad for Boots aspirin - double page spread of its virtues #history

I forgot to photograph the nursing journal this morning before work so hold off the anticipation until later in the day . I am up to 1925

Todays #HistNursing is from Oct 1925- 1st a note on arrears & big discussion on new nurses & midwives Act which is 3rd change since 1901, allows for maternity nurses, puts age of registration back to 23 after post war reduction to 21 - a time of change for 🇳🇿nurses

Today’s #HistNursing journal from July 1926 includes a review of nursing in China during the war there & a sad obit of nurses who died in a thunderstorm & influenza & as for woolen undies! 🙏. historians.org/resource/the-c….

Hope you are enjoying my little posts sipping into 100Year old nursing journals. One of the things I find gm fascinating is how relevant many of the topics are to current issues #HistNursing

Today’s #HistNursing is from Jan 1925- some nursing politics of a Matron being inappropriately dismissed by an all male board against wishes of nursing profession & some revolutionary new menstrual products available in plain packing from the Draper - sizes regular & hospital😃

Todays #HistNursing post is lighter April 1925 -small comment that restrictions moved as outbreak of ‘infantile paralysis’ lessened - ie polio -found a news item of a survivor rnz.co.nz/news/national/… also a couple of leisure ads for nurses- The DIC was iconic NZ store -I remember going as a child

Today’s #HistNursing post from Kaitiaki the editorial - the opportunity to have nurses university educated in 1926 was squashed when Otago University found out it would have to pay the teachers!😳 the advert is a reminder that consumption TB remains a concern #nursing #NZ

Military (animal) welfare ? #milwelfhist

These are informative and free sessions for all interested in unitary history

Todays random #HistNursing is from the Oct 1923 issue- great article on economic position with some resonance to current, given 50% grads don’t have jobs. advert for ergot based med & 2 military nurses obits (1 not NZANS) a nice read over my breakfast ☕️

Today’s random #HistNursing article april 1923 & on nutrition, most of which is valid today. I was actually talking to a colleague yesterday that nutrition is not part of the curriculum now. Advert for Sphagnol dressing with free gift! Link for interest tinyurl.com/3tcw937b

In 2020 I conducted an analysis of advertising to nurses in Kaitiaki NZ nursing journal from 1908-2009. This invoked going through each issue, counting & coding the ads- here are the 2 articles showing the societal changes #HistNursing

Jan 1923 Kaitiaki- NZ Nursing journal-surgery on baby-note rectal fluids, ads for stress- ovaltine or whiskey? Anatomy of a bullet wound on a woman #HistNursing - the online version here paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/periodicals/ka…

I bought this collection of NZ nursing journals over 25 years ago & while they are all digitised I love touching them. They’d been packed away for a few years - opened at this page on war memorials in England - some interesting articles - I’ll post a random one a day thru’ Jan #HistNursing

Exciting News! The Great War Group will have a brand new website next week! 🥳🎉🍾 The old website will be out of action and removed on Monday and the new one should be up and running at some point on Tuesday - watch this space….

This is a lovely photo of nurse Mabel Jamieson who trained in Palmerston North and served for the NZANS. She perished along with 9 other NZANS when the TS Marquette was torpedoed 23/10/1915. This photo only recently uncovered ehive.com/collections/... #HistNursing
