Why is there an ad for a Saville Road tailoring a movie theater in Oakland CA?

Read this somewhere -- social security system was programmed in COBOL, obsolete even when I learned programming as an undergrad. If required data is missing, it seems COBOL can't leave the field empty. Someone decided to default to 150 for age. So anyone would know not that was not genuine value.

A few years ago, I went to a presentation by a Berkeley colleague who had done research with IRS data. IRS databases are not accessible from the internet. He could not download data -- had to work in the IRS DC office. There are strong safeguards of access but Musk's children are ignoring them.

When I worked in public libraries, unqualified men were repeatedly hired into top jobs. The women who worked for them actually ran the organization. The anti-DEI group claims that DEI hires unqualified minorities over qualified ones. Would they now consider those men DEI hires?

Why are we not seeing this in this country?

Washington Post has gotten leaks from DOGE, it appears. Gift link. wapo.st/4jVWqEd

People supporting Trump’s cuts to medical research apparently think they & people they care about will never develop cancer, heart disease, and so on. They’ll live forever. No children will be born with genetic defects. And so on.

#superbowl Trump will have no idea what Kendrik Lamar was saying, even if he was paying attention, which is unlikely. I thought it a waste of time - but hate to agree with MAGA.

Cuts to research funding: remember that much of the on-the-ground work is done by PhD students and post-docs who will be the next generation of researchers. Cuts now will reverberate for decades as the scientific workforce is not renewed.

EVERYBODY should follow Alt National Park Service. They are reporting on shocking and illegal actions of Musk's people, and not just at NPS. Facebook and Bluesky.

Unbelievable! My mid-20s nieces from another state saw a sign for a service station offering smog-check and asked what that was. They had never heard of smog. There have been some climate wins over the decades.

A real photo and perfect metaphor heading into 2025.

Why we live here.

Has anyone checked Elon Musk's immigration status?

And there are two sides to every story, no more, no less?

Unexpectedly good movie: A Little Pain. Two cousins go on a Holocaust tour to Poland, where their grandmother was from. Very moving about their relationships to one another, their grandmother, and the holocaust without being sentimental. And I remembered why going to a *movie theater* is nice!

Thanksgiving: a turkey in the oven for local group that takes meals to homeless encampments. They don't have a big enough kitchen, so they parcel out dishes to volunteers. They get lots of volunteer servers, but home cooks? You can probably find a place near you that needs help at Christmas.

Well, rats. For once I was going to watch Cal football (Big Game vs Stanford) and it's on some obscure paid channel.
