Anyone else show up to work this morning and find a scene like this? This is our Fire Camera on Star Peak in Northern Nevada. Don't worry, we'll get the snow cleared off before Spring! #FieldWorkFriday.

This AM we had a mag 3.0 near Double Springs Flat, ~8 miles (13 km) NNW of Topaz Lake NV. Perfect day to highlight the 1994 magnitude 5.8 in Double Springs for #ThrowbackThursday! Here is a map from a paper by NSL scientists about the 1994EQ and its first 2 years of aftershocks.

Weekly Earthquake Roundup Day! So far, we located 84 earthquakes from Feb 12 to Feb 18, 2025. This week, there was a magnitude 2.94 in the Southern Nevada Seismic Belt. Learn more in this week's Roundup video: tinyurl.com/5n8z2th7

In the linked video, our network seismologist answers a question about the difference between an "earthquake swarm" and a "sequence of aftershocks." If you have seismology questions, let us know, we might have an answer for you! tinyurl.com/mvkskjmp

Happy #Valentinesday2025 from the movers and shakers here at the NSL! If you haven't gotten cards for your loved ones yet, we have some options for you!

For #ThrowBackThursday this week, we have been checking our Birthquakes! Your Birthquake is the largest earthquake that happened on the day you were born. Find yours here: www.iris.edu/app/birthqua... and tell us in the comments!

Happy Wednesday aka Weekly Earthquake Roundup Day! We located 101 earthquakes from Feb 5 to Feb 11, 2025. Most of the usual areas of the last couple weeks are still active. Watch this week's Roundup video: tinyurl.com/2wcpm8m8

⏳ Don’t Miss Out! RESESS, Geo-Launchpad, & Student Career Internship Applications Close This Weekend! Our internship applications close February 15 at 11:59 PM (Eastern)—don't miss your chance to gain hands-on experience in geoscience and beyond! Apply: www.earthscope.org/education/st...

When is an earthquake an aftershock? After the mainshock, stress released from slip on a the fault can transfer the local area. Aftershocks are part of the “readjustment process” as the stress finds a new equilibrium.

For this #fieldworkfriday, Field Team manager Will Honjas walks us through the typical NVSeismoLab fire cam set up around Nevada. Check out the video tinyurl.com/yc32dzxc

Did you know that the NV Seismo Lab also runs a network of fire cameras? Field team manager Will Honjas tells us the story of how the fire cameras network started. Check out the fire cams here 👇 tinyurl.com/zwtj736j

Weekly Earthquake Roundup! So far we located 75 earthquakes from Jan 29 to Feb 4, 2025. Are you wondering more about those earthquakes near the NV/OR border? Watch this week's Roundup video: tinyurl.com/2mw4phr

Meet 1st year NVSeismoLab PhD student Yair! Got questions about ground motion modeling or Yair’s collection of thermometers? Drop them in the comments 👇 #seismology #earthquake #nvseismolab #unr #nevada #reno #groundmotion #meetandgreet #meettheteam

At the NSL, we study where earthquakes happen AND how much the ground is likely to shake during an earthquake. Ground motion modeling work like Yair's can be used by scientists, engineers, and emergency responders to better plan for the shaking that comes during an earthquake.

NSL Postdoc Simone Masoch spent 2 weeks working on the Waterman Hills Detachment Fault in the Mojave Desert, CA. His goal was to learn how the fault formed, map the fault rocks, a look for signs of #earthquakes in the early to mid-Miocene (22-18 million years ago!). #FieldWorkFriday

Weekly #Earthquake Roundup! This week we located 77 quakes (so far!). Most of them are along the NV/CA border in an area called the Walker Lane Shear Zone. Learn a little about the Walker Lane in our Weekly Roundup video: tinyurl.com/7rnbue3v

Meet NVSeismoLab PhD student Maia! Got questions about big data seismology? Drop them in the comments 👇

Is it normal to get aftershocks a month after a magnitude 5.7 like the Parker Butte earthquake in December? Yes, yes it is.

Happy #FieldWorkFriday everyone! This week our team took a helicopter ride up in the beautiful snowy mountains of Northern Nevada to work on a couple fire cameras sponsored by BLM Nevada. We 🩶 working here in the Silver State.

Check out this article by @fox5vegas.com where NVSeismoLab director Prof. Christie Rowe discusses how our stations could be used to implement ShakeAlert early warning system in NV! tinyurl.com/mr7we3up

Weekly earthquake stats!Between Jan 15-Jan21, we located 81 earthquakes in NV! Our largest earthquake was a Ml3.91 located just outside Hawthorne.

🚨New paper alert 🚨 PhD candidate Annie Patton (UNR) shows that in calculating Mw for small earthquakes using spectral fitting, it’s particularly important to have well-constrained estimates of depth and apparent stress. Co-authored with an amazing team! Check it out here 👉 tinyurl.com/yk32j3yh

Curious about how the ShakeAlert Early Earthquake Warning System works? #nvseismolab grad student Danielle breaks it down for you in this quick and informative video! 👉 tinyurl.com/45mjua4j

Hey. Look at your fingernails. They're growing. Tectonic plates move relative to each other at about the same speed. Have a nice day.

This lovely #FieldWorkFriday morning our team was near Beatty, NV. We were scouting locations for new seismic stations again. This spot already has a GPS station. Do you think that GPS station would mind sharing it's hilltop with us?

Reconning locations in the Piper Mountain Wilderness for a new seismic station. At this site, we think we might see a fault scarp (dark linear shadow below peak). Can we put a station here just because it's pretty? Can we please?

This week, we located 100 earthquakes, just one more than we located last week! Our largest was a magnitude 3.16, again an aftershock from the Parker Butte magnitude 5.7 in December.

Everyone at the NSL is deeply concerned about the fires in LA and the safety and wellbeing of our California friends and neighbors. Our hearts are with the first responders and firefighters risking their lives to help people. Please consider making a donation to the LAFD Wildfire Emergency Fund.

Introducing the weekly earthquake roundup! Overall, a quieter week but had one moderate size event (Ml 3.58) in south central NV late on Saturday night and we’re still clocking aftershocks from the Parker Butte 5.7 in December.

First #fieldworkfriday of 2025! Some awesome scenes of our field team this week in Marble Canyon and repairing a station in Death Valley

Happy #fieldworkfriday! Some awesome views across Nevada from our field team

That’s a wrap! The NVseismolab had an awesome time at #agu24 sharing our research and engaging with others

Our earthquake geologists at the NVseismolab headed out to the ML5.8 epicenter looking for evidence of ground rupture. We didn’t find any, but did find secondary features from the shaking - like the mini mud volcano and landslide pictured

Awesome to see Nevada Seismo Lab PhD candidates Annie Patton and Maia Zhang presenting their research at #AGU24

Shout out to our field team who worked all night setting up temporary seismic stations near the epicenter of the ML 5.8 earthquake NNE of Yerington so we can better monitor aftershock activity.

I felt it! M5.7 in Nevada. earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/...

A shaky day for us here in Nevada with a M5.5 earthquake NNE of Yearington at 3:08pm. Did you feel the shaking? Report it here earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/...

Behind the scenes of NSL Director Christie Rowe giving an interview on the Mw 7.0 Northern #California #earthquake with Lesly Mariscal of Entravision (Spanish Language News) based in Reno. One of many interviews today!
