Cutting IRS weakens federal budget. But billionaires hate nothing more than paying to fund other Americans' education, health care, national parks, defense... IRS staff make them pay what they owe by law. Every $1 spent on IRS audits of millionaires+ recovers many $ in revenue from cheating.

Thank you for stepping us to meet this vital challenge, @ronjarmin.bsky.social! I ❤️ Census! thecensusproject.org/2025/02/21/r...

BREAKING: The Associated Press sues three Trump administration officials over access to presidential events, citing the First Amendment.

It may not be cool or hip in some circles, but we legitimately do need a massive amount of people to run for office. Flood the school boards, councils, county seats, state legislatures, Congress, etc. Big changes at the top happen when the ground shifts at the bottom. And that can start now.

Please share this fact sheet on Ukraine with anyone who needs it understandingwar.org/backgrounder...

Three years since Russia launched its full-scale war. Three years of Ukrainian heroism. It was an honour for me to receive the flag of the 36th Separate Marine Brigade, a witness to Ukrainians’ bravery on the battlefield. The EU will stand with Ukraine and its people, always.

I hate it so much that anyone doesn’t realize the people working for the federal government are patriotic in the deepest sense

Macron has just urged the French to join the military reserve. “We are entering a new era”. France will have to spend more on defence. “The threat that Russia represents imposes choices on us” (Live exchange on social media)

Some excellent guidance from MIT on step by step data preservation of secondary data: libraries.mit.edu/data-managem... (via Wendy Kozlowski orcid.org/0000-0001-65...)

NEW — In an alarming email last night reviewed by me, Coast Guard members learned that 1,135 members' direct deposit account routing information was compromised due to a data breach from unauthorized access. It was only discovered because an officer “reported anomalous activity” on their account.

👀 "If no lawyer within earshot of the President is willing to give him that advice, then I expect you will eventually find someone who is enough of a fool, or enough of a coward, to file your motion. But it was never going to be me." -- AUSA Hagan Scotten, SDNY.

Scotten was a Kavanaugh (DC Cir) and Roberts clerk ...

Question for the crowd: When data reporting is inconsistent (hello, EAVS, my old friend) -- do you prefer a DiD that a uses a balanced (ie, only keeps observations with data in all periods, but faces selection biases) or unbalanced (just throw all that data in there) panel?

"Another pardoned rioter taunted agents who worked on investigations linked to the events of Jan. 6, 2021, ridiculing them for worrying that they would be revealed and asking sarcastically, 'Why would you be afraid of us knowing your names?'” www.nytimes.com/2025/02/11/u...

We can’t say this enough: When people in Trump‘s orbit deliberately lie about how our constitutional democracy works, they violate the oaths they take to uphold the law. & they violate the trust the American people place in them.

This is the courage required of people who serve at the Justice Dept. Sassoon resigns, at no small personal cost, to protest the unjust order from DC to dismiss the case against Mayor Adams. Without fear of favor. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/13/n...

Acting AG Emil Bove tried to reassign Mayor Adams’ case to the public integrity unit at Main Justice in DC. Upon learning of this, senior DOJ officials resigned. The heroes are here.

This former US Atty supports the courage of Danielle Sassoon, the acting US Atty in SDNY, who put service ahead of self & refused to let politics interfere with prosecutions. True American hero. Thank you for your service, Danielle. You are the best of us. Who's with me?

The interim US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, a FedSoc member and former Scalia clerk, has done more to publicly expose the corruption of the Trump administration this week at greater personal cost than any elected official I can think of.

This is an absolute scandal. Trump and Marco Rubio abandoned American workers and their families abroad, delaying waivers to provide for their safe return to the United States. As these civil servants lost their possessions, housing, and money, Elon Musk was slandering them with bogus accusations.

This is like a bank robber getting to fire the cops and disable the alarms just before he strolls into the bank lobby.

They promised grocery prices would fall. I told you they were lying. Now they're either not talking about grocery prices, or “softening” their tone. Lemme translate: Grocery prices aren't coming down. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/12/b...

In case this won't be reported, Senate Dems are holding the floor for 30 hours to try to stall the RFK Vote! Here's the press release from Wyden's office.

This is absolutely insane. Musk’s DOGE crew just straight up *took* $80 million from an NYC bank account!

The American Bar Association is warning the public about attacks on the rule of law — and suing the Trump administration — following the US president's recent actions to dismantle parts of the federal government reut.rs/4gGpe0y 1/5

If you thought he was going to lower grocery prices, look in the mirror. Lock eyes with your reflection and say, I will stop being a sucker. I trust but also I learn from experience. I will stop being a sucker.

I feel this. It's not just with my normie non-academic friends and relatives who are unaware, it's w/ academic friends who aren't political scientists who are carrying on like nothing. I compartmentalize to a degree to stay sane too, but this cognitive dissonance in my life is stressful.

This is a really nice, simple distillation of the vital role NOAA and the NWS play and how private companies cannot replace what they do.

Someone at the American Bar Association ate their Wheaties this morning.

It could mean that the world financial system melts down when investors realize that Elon Musk may selectively default on US debt. Just saying.

Washington, D.C. yesterday. "Shut down the Senate, Shut down the Senate." Chanted for hours. More massive #USprotests, ongoing. Sources here report, "Millions of people are getting ready as we speak to take this country back and save the USA. Their days are numbered. Stay tuned." #3E

Opinion | I voted for Trump to put America First. Here’s why it’s so great that he handed off control to a South African who’s in bed with the Chinese government.

A reminder to DOGE.👇 "It is long settled that courts possess inherent authority to initiate contempt proceedings for disobedience to their orders, authority which necessarily encompasses the ability to appoint a private attorney to prosecute the contempt." -Young v. U.S. ex rel. Vuitton (1987).

Another example of what cutting science funding is doing to our leading university research programs in the U.S.: dismantling things like the Soybean Innovation Lab at UIUC, which have made US crop yields dramatically higher.

JD Vance - If you believe any of the multiple federal courts that have ruled against you so far are exceeding their statutory or Constitutional authority, your recourse is to appeal. You don’t get to rage-quit the Republic just because you are losing. That’s tyranny.
