Recent MS I worked w on in-press paper on freshwater mussel diversity - did all the right things, smart and hard working and gives a damn, just got fired by these horrid MAGA fascists. Early online version here, if you need a smart scientist on your team: www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/...

Today, along with 2,000 other NIH employees, I had to clear out my office 😭 It was truly the honor of my life to work with such incredibly passionate people focused on improving human health. I’ve never experienced a more positive culture where *everyone* cared about their job and serving others.

Just sitting here, trying to write a grant, crying for so many thousands who dedicated their lives to making the world better and safer, just thrown out like trash today.

two of my friends lost their fed science jobs today. their dream jobs. the jobs they worked so hard to get, knowing they’d never be rich but hoping they’d be happy.

Evergreen cartoon

Scientists first collected a pig butt worm from the dark ocean depths near Monterey, California. The size of marbles, pigbutts are a near complete mystery. Officially described in 2007, scientists aren’t even sure if the pigbutt form is an adult, or just a very very awkward adolescent stage.

🌊 🧑‍🔬 On #InternationalDayOfWomenAndGirlsInScience, we celebrate women shaping the future of ocean science! At #URIGSO, our women faculty, students, and staff drive discovery and innovation daily. We're committed to inspiring the next generation of women oceanographers, researchers, and leaders.

Another try to post a video: starfish larva, 1 mm long. This is a brachiolaria stage.

If you’re in DC pls go and make a witty sign and yell real loud for me tomorrow‼️ For the love of @noaa 🩵 www.mobilize.us/ccanactionfu...

This is the most relevant article to NIH and research cuts I’ve seen. Imagine if this was today , how many people would be saying “Why are we studying Gila Monsters and their impact on diabetes ? That’s wasted money !” globalnews.ca/news/9793403...

Excited to share our new paper! We developed a key to the genera of Caligidae, the largest family of parasitic copepods, which includes >500 species in 27 genera. Available here: doi.org/10.1645/24-97 I spent a lot of time imaging copepods for this project...🧪 [🧵1/5]

Made it thru Monday with a little help from Henry.

self-teaching bioinformatics is hard but god i feel so powerful when i finally get things to run. big computer go brrrrr

extremely bad update on the PRFB situation

THIS IS A CONCENTRATION CAMP DO YOU UNDERSTAND YET

To expand on this, right now ~200 postdoc fellows directly funded by NSF are locked out of their salary &research funds right before the first of the month. No doubt other NSF funded grads &postdocs are affected as well. All requests for funds put in before the freeze are slowly being cancelled

new book alert

Do not comply in advance.

On this #HolocaustRemembranceDay I think we need to be reminded of how it started and the timeline over which it developed.... www.museumoftolerance.com/education/te...

The U.S. ocean sciences community faces a critical challenge with the shrinking Academic Research Fleet. Since the 1980s, the fleet has halved, leaving scientists at a global disadvantage 🚢 Good news: 3 new #NSFfunded RCRVs will soon bolster research along our coasts. ➡️ @eos.org: buff.ly/4juo2QB

we probably won’t bankrupt him but we can take away one of his instruments of power by simply not participating

book haul 🤪 i’m a die hard kindle reader but it feels necessary to have physical copies of certain things…

me and a friend made figuring out how to download our data and delete our meta accounts a ✨group activity✨. highly recommend

Hi! I want to explore freshwater biodiversity in my local area with #eDNA 🧬 and #ONT MinION. The aim of my project -EUReKA- is to learn the full eDNA workflow, from experimental design and sampling to bioinformatics and visualization - all from home! Looking for #mentors to guide me. Let’s chat!

Bye bye #Target #GrabYourWallet

my federally employed friends across at least three different agencies received some version of this email yesterday. the descent into fascism is no longer an “if” or a “when”. we are here 📍

In case you've never seen a shrimp heart beat before, here you go! The heart is clear and just behind the dark parts, where the tail connects. (Sorry for the shakiness I used my phone without a mount.)

ISO plankton and baby fish people to follow on here 🗣️

TIL that "embarrassingly parallel" is a real term used in computing

Elon Musk showed who he really is by endorsing Germany's new Nazi party, far-right AfD, this week. This is the same Nazi party Cheesus invited to MaL recently. I posted on that last week.
