Thanks to the hard work of our volunteers the overgrown vegetation encroaching on the area of acid grassland has been cut back with the added bonus of making the grave of angler Thomas Walker visible once more. You can read more about Thomas here: wardsendcemetery.wordpress.com/thomas-walker/

Further to @listerlanecem.bsky.social's post we too have a Napoleonic War veteran buried at our cemetery who fought at the Battle of Waterloo. His gravestone lists the 21 Battles he was involved in mainly during the Peninsular Wars. Benjamin Elliott's headstone was bought by public subscription.

The latest find by my brother in our 'Missing Headstones Project' was that of Maria Weston who died in 1868. The fallen headstone was buried approx. 3-4 inches under the surface. Once discovered we can fill in gaps on a database for future generations to use.

James Creighton was an engineer & superintendent at the Grade II listed Bedfordwell Water Pumping Station where he lived with his wife Fanny. He had a masonic funeral in February 1907 & his grave was paid for by the Eastbourne Freemasons www.gracesguide.co.uk/James_Creigh...

May I ask fellow Friends groups if you have set up trail cams to watch the wildlife in your cemeteries? 📷 @fotc.au @fowarristoncem.bsky.social @fotc.au @fownc.org @listerlanecem.bsky.social @fohpc.bsky.social and all Thank you.

Sat on our new bench today just listening to the birds! 🙂 @rspb.bsky.social @rspbengland.bsky.social

The Friends recently bought an old bench which is being restored for us by Bob C. Placed in the Victorian half of the cemetery & blends in so well. Few more coats of paint to cover the new slats & it will be as good as new. Visitors can sit in these tranquil surroundings & watch the world go by!

Do join us for the next meeting of Family Roots via Zoom on Thursday, 6th February. Members free but register using the link on your newsletter, visitors welcome, see our online shop to register and buy tickets at £2.50. www.eastbournefhs.org.uk 1 of 2.

Lot of research going on during these cold snaps when visiting the cemetery means thermals are needed! This is Julia's research on William Bourn. 'William was a well-respected local policeman who died in 1905 and is interred with his wife at Ocklynge cemetery.

Welcome to @ebfamilyroots.bsky.social who we work very closely with. They undertook the transcribing of the headstones at the cemetery & their CDs subsequently published have been invaluable for our own research. You can find these on @findmypast.bsky.social under Parish Burials.

This year's annual Lighthouse Challenge has been announced! Details via link below. Thank you to AM Rotary for organising. 🙂 www.rotary-ribi.org/clubs/page.p...

Whether you donate £1 or £1000, every contribution helps us discovering more about bats, take action to protect them, educate people about bats and their environment along with enabling more people to get involved in bat conservation. Thank you ♥️ 🦇https://buff.ly/3fyG3uW

Four more beautifully carved crosses from the cemetery. The workmanship leaves us in awe.

We are taking part in the @rspb.bsky.social survey today at the cemetery. As parks can also be used for the survey we felt that the cemetery would be ideal. We see a variety of birds there whilst we are working and Jo, our Secretary, is our 'bird whisperer' particularly with the jay population!

@chrislintott.bsky.social - firstly my apologies as you have probably been asked this many times before but is The Sky at Night coming back to BBC? My brother was just bemoaning the fact it isn't on anymore!

Jolly cold up the cemetery today. We were checking the fat filled coconut shells we'd hung up recently but no sign of them! We decided that very big squirrels must have buried them for their winter store! 😁 Another one of our volunteers was photographing graves to upload to @findagrave.bsky.social

Will be looking out for these at the cemetery. 🦋

@debbie1alston.bsky.social Have you been to the cemetery yet? We would love to have a chat sometime about all the wildflower species we have. My personal favourite is the Pyramid Orchids.
