I would like to emphasize that the governor of the state of NY, a democrat, intervened in college activities, something she has no business in, for political reasons. This is authoritarianism. Period. And the coverage is not nearly as forceful as that reality requires.

One of the factors in the dynamic Erik describes is who gets to define work and productivity. Musk considers his every move and meme to constitute valuable “work” while he dismisses the labor of federal employees as nothing but “waste.” Because of his wealth, his definition is widely taken as truth.

Since the 1950s, Summer Language Workshops at Indiana University have provided training in Russian, East European, and Central Asian languages. Generations have come to Bloomington to study Romanian, Polish, Kazakh, etc. Rubio just cancelled all of them languageworkshop.indiana.edu/summer-langu...

RFK Jr. Vows To Make Measles Deaths So Common They Won’t Be Upsetting Anymore

This is so unhinged what is wrong with people on this site lmao

The Blue MAGA comments on this, Yeesh.

Read Erik in the New York Times and then, if you're in Winnipeg, see Erik give a talk, "Entrepreneurship vs. Democracy" at the University of Manitoba on Friday at 2:30pm in Tier 409. @seancarleton.bsky.social @ryankturnbull.bsky.social @jtichon.bsky.social

The Canadian tuxedo after Canada's annexation.

there really ought to be more discussion about the fact that virtually every promise (or denial) trump made during the campaign was a total lie

I have a new piece out today in @thebaffler.com on the disunity of class conflict in America today, accompanied by one of the most horrifying illustrations I've ever been lucky enough to have grace my writing thebaffler.com/latest/one-e...

Bernie was right. Billionaires shouldn't exist.

A new McCarthy era is upon us. Stupid, depressing, and dangerous as ever. I wonder whose name will carry the dunce cap in the history books. Too many are complicit. I’ll need to find upset and action, but for now I’m feeling grief at the dehumanization inherent to all this.

Hochul’s move here is profoundly racist and dehumanizing. Defining Palestinian studies as fundamentally antisemitic means defining Palestinians as something to be erased. It is genocidal. This is also an unacceptable attack on academic freedom. The governor should have no say in faculty hiring.

So are we still buying the dip?

"Asked how the meeting went, state Sen. Art Haywood provided WHYY News with a one-word reply: “Bullshit.” He did not comment further."

The Democrats to yell at: Bennet (CO) Blumenthal (CT) Cortez Masto (NV) Durbin (IL) Fetterman (PA) Gallego (AZ) Hassan (NH) Heinrich (NM) Hickenlooper (CO) Kelly (AZ) Klobuchar (MN) Peters (MI) Reed (RI) Rosen (NV) Shaheen (NH) Warner (VA)

In Jacobin, Julia Damphouse observes that losing their "anti-woke" faction helped Die Linke regain its footing as a straightforwardly left party. That's encouraging! Perhaps something similar could be possible in the US. Maybe even at certain left-wing magazines. jacobin.com/2025/02/germ...

NEW: updated long-run gap in voting between young men and women in Germany: Gender divide continues to widen, but contrary to what is often assumed, young men continue to vote roughly in line with the overall population, while young women have swung sharply left. www.ft.com/content/29fd...

Likud Knesset member Nissim Vaturi called yesterday to execute all the adult Palestinian men in Gaza. Vaturi is deputy speaker of the Knesset. www.inn.co.il/news/662252

With another set of news headlines about political elites using “””Roman salutes””” I just want to note that the Nazi salute means “I want to murder your family” and the n-word means “I want to lynch you.” That’s what they mean, they make me righteously angry, and I won’t let anybody minimize them.

"Young 🇩🇪 voters are flocking to the far rig-" 🧐🤔

Merz just said on German TV that the primary priority of his government will be to ensure that Europe can achieve full strategic independence from the United States in the defence against Russia. Merz was once a die hard Atlanicist. Now, after Trump he is a Gaullist. Extraordinary.

bitter results in Germany, but at least the AfD comes in at 20%. In the US, the identical platform got 49%. please let’s keep the FDP at 4.9, folks.

A nice bedtime story (if only journalists would start speaking truth to power!), but not a serious interpretation of the conjuncture.

I probably would have been writing a ton about Project 2025 in 2024 if it were not for the genocide. I'm sure that's true about a ton of the best policy researchers out there. The impact of Democratic Party-backed genocide comes through in a thousand different ways that are largely not measurable

It would be especially promising if it were carried out by a corporation called the Ukraine Free State, owned by Trump Enterprises.

Not very fun fact: thousands of Jewish immigrants with whose presence Germany has decorated itself, my parents included, are not voting today b/c they don’t have a path to citizenship, despite living there for two decades or more. www.juedische-allgemeine.de/gemeinden/ke...

I'm old enough to remember when China doing deals with African countries exchanging minerals for infrastructure was a dangerous kind of exploitation and imperialism.

If someone on the left said this about Medicare for all, every newspaper in America would be calling them a communist for a decade. But if your plan is to illegally resegregate the workforce, you’re a pragmatist.

I feel like we’re weeks away from seeing Trumpers do this en masse at a rally
