I’m old enough to remember when the NYT’s coverage of higher education was being directed by Christopher Rufo, by tweet

If you read one thing today… www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

So it seems that I'm staying on this bandwagon for the foreseeable future. FLY, EAGLES, FLY!

Have you all seen Tiger Woods lately? The man had the benefit of 2 youthful dna streams, and squandered it! Asian don’t raisin; Black don’t crack, but I guess when you swim in the cesspool of hate, you just don’t age well. 😬

🚨BREAKING: Federal Court GRANTS sweeping nationwide injunction against Trump DEI executive orders finding that they violate First and Fifth Amendments to the Constitution. A huge victory for @democracyforward.org and its clients. A stinging loss for Trump. Visit www.democracydocket.com for details.

Sharing for my Higher Ed friends via @oiyanpoon.bsky.social “A legal memo from a whole crew of civil rights law professors/lawyers offering further actual legal guidance about diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher ed.”

This cartoon was drawn in 1923. You could have fooled me. I thought it was published in 2023.

Cartoonist Leslie Rogers would have been in his 20s when he drew this cartoon for the Chicago Defender. He died about a decade later, but not before launching the long-running Black comic strip Bungleton Green (which was continued by Jay Jackson and others).

Tyranny requires your fear, your silence, and your compliance. Democracy requires your courage.

The root that tears apart your foundation begins as a seed of distrust, hate, and blame. The seed that grew into a dictatorship in Europe didn’t arrive overnight. It started with everyday Germans mad about inflation and looking for someone to blame.

On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 which authorized the US military to forcibly remove over 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry and launched their mass incarceration into concentration camps during World War II.

Lawyers, this is what it looks like to honor your oath as a lawyer and as a prosecutor. I want to lift up Denise Cheung, one of a growing group of senior DOJ lawyers who have put the rule of law ahead of politics & short-term career advancement. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/u...

The 47th admin’s anti-trans EO threatens unconstitutional censorship that could have a grave impact on literature for years to come. In dismissing trans, intersex, and nonbinary identities, the order blacklists LGBTQIA+ literature. We don’t stand for this! #TransLivesMatter

Today is February 19, 2025 - the anniversary of an Executive Order that will live in infamy. EO 9066, signed by FDR, led to the mass incarceration of over 120,000 Japanese Americans, who were "systematically dispossessed and forcibly stripped of their rights" (@jamuseum.bsky.social). 1/5

I had some things to say in this article: “The letter is a blatant overreach from . . . that goes far beyond repressive legalism and attempts to bully universities into adopting a suicide pact by narrowing access to higher education for deserving students” www.forbes.com/sites/michae...

Here's the guidance we need from the brilliant Liliana Garces, on the garbage "dear colleague guidance" from Trump/Musk. www.chronicle.com/article/hitt... DM me if you want the pdf behind the paywall.

new from @oiyanpoon.bsky.social & @janellewong.bsky.social ya'll should have listened to the social scientists. www.insidehighered.com/opinion/view...

2 upcoming virtual book talks. I have a lot on my mind right now (as we all do) and I have some things to share. Please spread the word and sign up. Mon 2/24, 4 p.m. PST lnkd.in/gBRpyGRP Thur 3/13, 6 p.m. EST www.eventbrite.com/e/asian-amer...

READ this from @oiyanpoon.bsky.social and @janellewong.bsky.social "Now that the latest enrollment numbers for the first year after the Supreme Court’s decisions have been released, it is clearer than ever that those myths about affirmative action were untrue."

Trump/Elon say these programs harm AsAms, but I’ve been in convo with AsAm students working with other students of color to defend their campus programs and student centers. Don’t believe the fascist trolls in the White House!

New letter from Trump Dept of Ed suggests racial equity programs/DEI disadvantage #AsianAmericans and whites. Asian Americans, we should challenge this false, dangerous narrative EVERY SINGLE TIME. @oiyanpoon.bsky.social and I show why below www.insidehighered.com/opinion/view...

Good discussion by @oiyanpoon.bsky.social & @janellewong.bsky.social about the racist ploy to use Asian American students & families to threaten colleges over admissions, diversity, & who is framed as ‘deserving’ of attending highly rejective institutions. www.insidehighered.com/opinion/view...

The university that declares “We are not throwing trans kids under the bus, we are not ending diversity and inclusiveness efforts, and we are not opening our doors to ICE agents” would not only be uniquely heroic but would be doing some strong branding work on the cheap.

@oiyanpoon.bsky.social gave an amazing talk at UCD SOE yesterday about her newest book, Asian American is Not A Color. Such important work!

Thanks to everyone who came to On Waverly to hear @oiyanpoon.bsky.social talk about her new book, "Asian American is Not a Color" with @jeffchang.bsky.social! We had so many thoughful conversations on cross-racial solidarity! To order Oiyan's book: www.onwaverly.com/products/asi...

Jesus, Gen X, what the hell is wrong with us?

I know a lot is going on, but wanted to reshare info about a great conversation that is happening tomorrow centering @oiyanpoon.bsky.social & her recent book, ‘Asian American is Not a Color.’

I recently learned about a college that uses the term “institutional performance equity gaps" to intentionally point out that if there are demographic differences in student experiences, it points to the need for their institution to do better. I plan to adopt this phrase from now on.

I remember writing this section in the week following the Indianapolis shooting. I’m so grateful for this acknowledgment @vivianshaw.bsky.social!

This new lawsuit against the University of California for doing admissions without a race-conscious practices, and basically for having more Black and Latinx UC students than the plaintiffs like, is an extended project going back at least two decades. publicpedagogy.substack.com/p/the-latest...

My sense is that modern day Dems’ “decorum” and lack of political imagination is bolstered by this elitist fantasy that our systems work relatively well when smart liberal wonks are in charge whereas Republicans/Confederates decided a long time ago to just keep trying to burn the whole thing down.

When you understand that the role of the US Dept of Ed has always been about enforcing civil rights (connected to Reconstruction) you realize why Trump/Musk want it gone.

Last night, my kid got emotional about all the classmates (about 1/3) in her Chicago 4th grade class that were out of school for the #DayWithoutImmigrants action, which made it really clear to her how central immigrants are in our community, and how we need to protect our community.

“Historically” is a 🚩?!?! You can no longer be considered for fed research funding if your study acknowledges or includes history?!

Gentle reminder, naked preference for loyal mediocre white dudes is NOT “affirmative action for white people” Affirmative Action rewards those who excel under harsh conditions. The shit Trump is doing rewards Twitter trolls who lick his boots.

🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.
