Tonight’s literally hobbled together pizza.

It looks nice outside but I can’t do anything. Glad to have a couple of new books.

I’d never seen Good Will Hunting before. What kinda apples do you want? Or whatever.

Thursday is usually pizza night here.

The inevitable and disappointing conclusion of the Illinois flag redesign project. Poorly handled from start to finish. wgntv.com/news/illinoi...

Burn it all down. Here’s tonight’s pizza.

This Saturday, the STA (back from the dead?) has organized a tour of the current Immigrant Printing exhibit at the Newberry Library. There are only a few spots. www.eventbrite.com/e/special-cu...

New additions to the library. Bought for the W. F. Hall specimen (which has a wild wood face cut for a large Chicago meat packer) but the other two are also gems. The ATF booklet is particularly nice, very handsome early American modernism.

Just testing Flashes with a rejected {. Why does this app exist?

The typography section is not to be missed.

Happy Malört Day to those who celebrate.

My book How Comics Were Made is now on a significant sale—40% off ($39 plus shipping). The reason in part: it’s warehoused in Canada and tariffs may arrive soon. So I am motivated to get copies to you now. See the quoted post for a fraction of the glories inside! glog.glennf.com/hcwm-store/h...

I wonder if they include the trend of canceling webfont licenses and replacing them with six and seven figure annual fees.

Just two more days left for vote to make Wallace Rice’s centennial flag the Illinois state flag. www.ilsos.gov/special/IFC/... — photo from the Barnhart 1925 type specimen that for unknown reasons incorrectly labeled it as the IL state flag. Maybe exactly one hundred years too early?

Yes, Google is evil. The easiest thing you can do is quit using Chrome. Looking at 65.8% of you.

Took a year but I finally got my FAQ un-faqed. okaytype.com/faq If the annoying colors are annoying, you can press \ to shuffle them.

Someone asked if I‘d considered drawing a serif version of Euchre. It hadn’t crossed my mind before. But I can’t stop sketching...

Thanks to everyone who chipped in advice for dealing with public speaking anxiety. 🙏 My talk happened and it wasn’t a disaster. Key lessons were to aggressively block out anxious thoughts (played a lot of crosswords and slept with tv on) and to write a loose outline instead of a script.

Found the prospectus for DaBoll’s magnum opus tucked between two books.

Just learned the Caxton Club still meets in person to watch their zoom presentations and have lunch.

Paul Gehl is giving a talk at the Newberry Library on February 19th about his recent book on Robert Hunter Middleton. There are also discounted copies of a few RHM books. caxtonclub.org/event-5903252

You can’t eat design awards. You can only post about them to social media.

Happy to hear any tips on overcoming anxiety about speaking in public (or in general). I haven’t tried since TypeCon DC when I so nervous I didn’t sleep for four days.

I got roped into talking about some of my work. February 6th. Somewhere in Chicago. Sorry in advance. chicagographicdesign.club/programming/...

Had to get a new iphone and was devastated to discover my go-to ebook reader, Marvin 3, was removed from the App Store. Any rex for good new reading apps?

Some of the best writing* on the topic of typography can be found in the _Typography Papers_ published at The University of Reading within the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication. They are now available to read online. typography.network/typographypa... *I might be biased.

Congratulations to Lisa Huang and the whole team behind @wordsoftype.com on today's beta launch! This is already a great resource and is going to keep getting better. wiki.wordsoftype.com/

Found a really great little design blog but it has no RSS feed and the only social is an old twitter account. 🙂‍↔️

Revisiting this fantastic film of Rädisch cutting punches at Enschedé. Narrated by Matthew f'n Carter. Certainly a must watch for aspiring type designers. www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHjZ...

Public voting for the Illinois state flag redesign is open. The good news is you can vote for the original 1917 Wallace Rice Centennial design. www.ilsos.gov/special/IFC/...
