Imagine if the Grand Canal in Dublin looked and felt like this. It's nothing stopping us. Except our obsession with cars that is.

Yet another study finds that diverse forests store far more carbon than monoculture plantations. Previous research in the tropics showed it could be 40x more. Natural forests also help stabilise the climate in other, equally vital ways. WHEN will this penny drop? scienceblog.com/tree-diversi...

Waste management in the Norwegian Mountains is miles ahead of Dublin’s mess. Dublin City Council needs to take back control from private companies, ditch the bags, install underground bins, and clean up the city.

'In January, climate action advocate and Dundalk GP Dr Seán Owens was seriously injured while cycling home from work. Dr Lisa McNamee of @irishdocsenv.bsky.social encourages us all to multiply his extraordinary efforts until he is well enough to rejoin us.'

This was difficult to write. If you're feeling despair, you are not alone. Action is what lifts me out of those feelings.

A truly beautiful piece by Dr Lisa McNamee (@lisadangermcnamee.bsky.social)! Everyone should read this!

Let’s make hospital coffee shops about health, nutrition, and sustainability, not profits. #SustainableDiets #SustainableHealthcare @irishdocsenv.bsky.social

My letter in the @irishtimes.com this morning. The media must do a much better job when it comes to reporting on road deaths.

If road deaths were a virus, we’d call it a pandemic.

Fantastic piece by the one and only @whittledaway.bsky.social! We desperately need to restore Ireland's degraded ecosystems. These predators belong here. It's time to bring them back and bring back balance.

The minister appears to lack a fundamental understanding of how healthcare is delivered. Increasing consultant presence alone will do little to alleviate pressure on the healthcare system.

Oh yes... This will really solve the crisis... 🙄

The 'world-class' Clontarf Cycle Route. Designed and built by someone who’s never seen a bike. Companies like Tesco can block it when they want. Not even 6 months old, but already being dug up, and the poor surfacing is being replaced with something even worse. You despair.

This is antisocial dangerous behaviour that needs to be addressed. We will never change our broken transport system away from car addiction unless we address this behaviour and make it completely unacceptable.

The Clontarf cycle route this morning. Tesco do this every morning (their truck is hidden behind the other illegally parked van): Block the cycle lane with trolleys and cones, forcing cyclists into the road. No enforcement. No respect.

Never mind the deranged interview with car lover Conor Faughnan hating on cycle lanes and safer roads (no red light cameras), but the opening ad, a new Toyota...“zipping around town” while claiming to help the environment (WHILE DRIVING)? Madness.

Great letter by Dr David O'Connell in today's Irish Times. When it comes to obesity, medications certainly help and they have a role to play, but active transport is prevention. Investing in healthier streets saves lives and money

Deer population 'out of control' due to lack of wolves. There are no ifs or buts, if we want to restore Ireland’s decimated ecosystems, we must reintroduce apex predators.

“I have never really been the owner of these forests, nor could I be.” The wonderfully inspiring story of a Columbian ex-rancher, who turned from destroyer of forests to their protector and restorer, establishing a 7,500-acre nature reserve teeming with life. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

It would be amazing to see something like this in Ireland.

"This is not our world with trees in it. It's a world of trees where humans have just arrived." – Richard Powers We must make peace with nature and learn to live in harmony with it. My letter in the IT last weekend.

Ireland is the poorest rich country in the world. Appalling transport infrastructure, a crippling housing crisis, a healthcare system on its knees—yet one of the highest costs of living in Europe. Where’s the value for money?

Can anyone look at this graphic and say that we do not urgently need rewilding on a massive scale?

Public libraries are amazing! Did you know you can borrow a book from any library in the country and return it to any other library? Did you know they have subscriptions to huge amounts of national and international media that you can access?

There’s nothing stopping people’s commute in Dublin from looking like this. We just need brave political leadership!

At first glance, a quintessentially beautiful Irish landscape. But in reality, it's a deadzone. The graveyard of a once species-rich Atlantic rainforest wonderland, smothered under sheep and, in the distance, sitka. We are, however, waking to just how much has been stolen from us.

War on Airbnb lockboxes won’t solve the mess that is Dublin. A brilliant piece by Jennifer O'Connell. Dublin City Councils are masters of tokenism. They pretend to care and act, but in reality, they do very little.
