ICE is such a clear example of a thing that is overtly extremist in its entire concept that just got immediately treated like a normal part of the government. it is younger than me!! it was an authoritarian overreach from the beginning!! hard to trust anyone who treated it like it was legitimate

"Masked security forces captured an opposition leader in the coastal province of New Jersey as regime officials continue their months-long crack-down against pro-democracy elements in the embattled United States. The arrest comes as the regime issued calls for summary detentions without trial."

Rümeysa Öztürk has been freed!!

“Abolish ICE” is the moderate position. Radical is “prosecute every ICE employee under RICO.”

going to go full reddit atheist for a moment but at the end of the day any pope is still the pope of a horrific global religious institution

I got the best teaching evals of my career for a large course last semester— along with three teaching awards— after rebuilding my intro class around in-class handwritten essays. I simply do not believe that this is unsolvable or that students don't care about actually learning to do their work.

To care about agency is to attend to real persons who acted for reasons, on motives, under influences, from live options. To ignore imaginary persons who could have but did not act from different reasons, motives, and options is not to "deny agency" but to deny arbitrariness, magic, ghosts.

The papal election—like almost all elections—should be by sortition.

Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I don’t think it very much matters whether the kid is Michael Jackson’s son. He should step up anyway.

These people want you dead. It's okay to enjoy their tears.

Mark Carney is surprisingly fun and interesting for a banker, and way more serious than any alternative. I love him. He earned my first Liberal vote since 2015.

Canadians! It’s election day. Please go vote, and do so intelligently. For the first time in my life, it may actually be consequential. We need to root out the fascist elements of our political class (Reform) and repudiate Trump-style politics. And that falls on all of us.

Zeteo commissioned this poll from Data for Progress and it is pretty clear that the Democratic base prefers the progressive/leftist position on every issue from Israel-Palestine to healthcare to even immigration. Full poll results and analysis: zeteo.com/p/exclusive-...

I find it kind of funny that leftists today really like Third Place Theory, which is explicitly and unavoidably conservative, when the actual leftist option (right to the city) is just right there for all to see.

My ancestors crossed the Atlantic three centuries ago and I am an American in the exact same way as the infant child of undocumented immigrants born here yesterday. There is no difference between us, their right to this country no less than mine. We are entirely equal and I will accept nothing else.

I love that Doug Ford and Pierre Poilievre hate each other. Especially because while the former is corrupt and kind of dumb, the latter is actually evil. And I’d take corrupt and dumb over actually evil every day of the week.

I guess the Trump Bible doesn't contain the part about murdering with someone else's sword (2 Samuel 12:9-10). These people are pure evil.

“I think that journalists should have a bias. And that bias should be towards facts, truth, reality, democracy.” @mehdirhasan.bsky.social had a conversation with award-winning journalist @sangitamyska.bsky.social about impartiality in this new digital era for journalism

"the coddling of the american conservative" would be such a good book

Q: "How do you respond to Governor Newsom?" Sen. Van Hollen: "I think Americans are tired of elected officials or politicians who are all finger to the wind...Anybody who can't stand up for the Constitution and the right of due process doesn't deserve to lead."

How does Yglesias ever expect to get to one billion Americans with an attitude like this?

This is asinine. “They look down on you because you live in rural America!” is a right-wing myth and Democrats’ policies are objectively better for working class white people than Republicans’. These people aren’t victims of ‘both parties,’ they’re victims of propaganda.
