Chloroform arrived on the scene as an anaesthetic in 1847, becoming the anaesthetic of choice in surgical theatres. However, it made surgery more dangerous and surgeons more hesitant to use it. It was Queen Victoria’s use of chloroform for childbirth, which helped to destigmatise the anaesthetic.

Pills offered a way to accurately measure single doses of medicine in the 18th/19th centuries. Ingredients were mixed with an inert fluid, then rolled into a pipe-shape. The apothecary worked the pipe into the machine's grooves, creating cut pills. Pills were coated in anything from talc to gold!

🪑 The Lithotomy Chair 🪑 This handmade pine chair from [Old] St Thomas' Hospital was designed for lateral lithotomy (bladder stone removal). Low to spare surgeons' backs, it let them sit while operating—a must for precision. Surgeon John Flint South called it "sturdy" but we call it nerve-wracking!
