you can use this to your advantage sometimes. some pieces like pawns "promote" to a stronger piece when they reach the enemy's spawn tile.

the spawn tiles (places where you and the enemy can place chess pieces) are now determined dynamically, and can change as you add or remove tiles from the board. #indiedev #gamedev

in addition to removing agency, randomness can also destroy the pacing of a game if its present in an environment not designed for it. it's a great fit for roguelikes where the point is to engage with random challenges (randomness serves as an unpredictable difficulty spike)

i realize that when i'm alone, i sometimes commit to bad ideas and have to change my mind too late. booster packs will not make it into the game. having packs that give random card rewards takes agency out of the players hands. i have something more devious planned. #solodev #gamedev #pixelart

i think about how simple 2d games can still be outstanding flagbearers of good game feel and design. technological progress in video games doesn't always signify a growth in game quality, and at times actually obscures the quality of the game and distracts from its flaws.
