Watch out for an upcoming bluetorial/tweetorial on this work from the amazing @alisiafadini.bsky.social! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

#NIHFundedDiscovery How do cells avoid the "kiss of death"? Gap junctions share life-saving signals—but under stress, they shut down to prevent spreading cytotoxic damage. #CryoEM reveals the molecular switches behind this process! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

New York Times article now up on Federal Register stuff. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/21/s... 1/n

Our paper "Structural basis of aquaporin-4 autoantibody binding in neuromyelitis optica" is published in Science Advances today 🥂 🎊 tinyurl.com/MGuptaSA Huge congratulations to the team- @nkhandelwal.bsky.social, Andrew Nelson, Peter Hwang, Sergei Pourmal, Jeffrey Bennett, ROBERT M STROUD!

The court ordered that NIH grant funding be unfrozen, so The Regime found a way around it. For NIH grants to be funded, a review panel must rank them. In order for a review panel to meet, they must post it on the Federal Register. Submissions to the Federal Register are now on hold “indefinitely”.

It’s becoming apparent to me through multiple conversations with people over the last 3 days that NIH funding mechanisms that have not already gone through review and council will be delayed by AT LEAST 6 months.

If the block on the Federal Register isn’t removed in the next few months, I fear a majority of labs will close within a year. This small procedural wrench has the power to kill US science indefinitely, losing an entire generation of discovery and innovation.

Well done Kookjoo Kim on a great poster presentation, here visited by an RyR VIP, @filipvanpetegem.bsky.social! And thanks @biophysicalsoc.bsky.social, @popstarlab.bsky.social & team for a great #BPS2025 under challenging circumstances - see you next year in SF!

Scoop --> Trump-Musk cuts just resulted in the firing of numerous top researchers at NIH's center for combating Alzheimer's, sources tell me. They predict big setbacks to fighting dementias. This cause was once championed by *Republicans.* Details here: newrepublic.com/article/1917...

A large portion of grants awarded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health cannot be funded for the foreseeable future because of an indefinite hold on submissions to the Federal Register, according to an email reviewed by The Transmitter. By @avaskham.bsky.social bit.ly/3X8ngz8

Join us for an emergency town hall meeting today at 1:30 PM regarding the impact of US policies on biophysics research — and what you can do about it.

“We are deeply concerned about this causal act that toys with the accessibility of publicly funded research, coupled with a range of attacks on the public funding of science… and federal researchers. We see this as the government playing with truth, a 2025 digital equivalent of book burning”

Thanks to all who attended the #BPS2025 #cryoem symposium yesterday, and the happy hour last night! We heard some superb science at the symposium and had some great discussions which were continued in the evening. And congratulations to Dr. Elizabeth Wright, our inaugural Almeida Award winner!

NEW ROOM: I've deleted the original one. We're having an emergency Town Hall at the #BPS2025 #BPS to discuss the assault on #science and actions we can take. @biophysicalsoc.bsky.social Pls. Repost this one. :)

Excited to be at #BPS2025! 🚀 Our lab is contributing to the #cryoEM symposium, showcasing how computational methods and AI are revolutionizing cryo-EM analysis. See you there! 🔬💡 #Biophysics #AI Read our papers to know more: www.nature.com/articles/s41... www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

For calibration, I believe that ~20,000 people work(ed) at NIH.

(Sorry I took a brief timeout for uncontrollable weeping) In other NIH news, I have heard from multiple sources that NIH plans to fire most, if not all, probationary employees this afternoon. The numbers I am hearing are >5000. Lots of folks extramural staff, intramural scientists, etc.

BREAKING: StatNews reports that more than 5,000 HHS employees across NIH, CDC and other public health and research agencies will be fired this afternoon. www.statnews.com/2025/02/14/f...

Clarke lab at #BPS2025 - Emmanuel (Clarke/Colecraft grad student) has a platform talk with some beautiful #cryoem structures of nanobody-E3 ligase complexes;

Can't wait to see you all at #BPS2025 for the #cryoem subgroup symposium! 8:30am-12:30pm, Sat Feb 15, Room 515B See detailed program at the link below. We have some superb science lined up, so please join us for what I hope will be a fantastic morning of science!

Thrilled to be returning back to NYC & NYU for this meeting!

Jazzed to join the cool kids club and have our paper reporting the reconstitution of zyxin-mediated repair of contractile actin networks appear in @currentbiology.bsky.social ! bit.ly/41enkjo

Hello new followers 🖖 I like looking at the plasma membrane by high res microscopy. Here, you see a platinum replica EM of a fibroblast plasma membrane with clathrin dome (in the center) and caveolae (small invaginations on the side)

well it has certainly been an amusing prank to let the worst people alive take over the american government for a few weeks, but I think it's probably gone on long enough

Been thinking about creating a collection of good protein structure figures, as inspiration for my own work. #1 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

BREAKING On Monday, Popular Information broke the news that the NIH had frozen virtually all grant funding in violation of 2 federal court orders On Wednesday, NIH leadership distributed a memo, acknowledging that its funding freeze was illegal and directing staff to resume issuing grants.

Welcome to the Bluesky account for Stand Up for Science 2025! Keep an eye on this space for updates, event information, and ways to get involved. We can't wait to see everyone #standupforscience2025 on March 7th, both in DC and locations nationwide! #scienceforall #sciencenotsilence

Internal NIH guidance updated yesterday. Just canceling stuff each day from here on out I guess, pending new guidance. Killing science off both slowly and incredibly rapidly.

This is a fantastic meeting for the Cryo-EM community in the NYC area. This year it will take place on the East Coast of Manhattan. Please come and join us!

Registration is now open for the 2025 NYC CryoEM meeting, organized by Bill Rice (NYU) & @fravallese.bsky.social (CUNY/ASRC) Always a great meeting with lots of new #cryoem work by rising stars in/around NYC Max 140 people so register now (it’s free)!

BREAKING The Trump administration is maintaining a funding freeze at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in defiance of two federal court orders. The ongoing freeze was confirmed by an NIH official and internal correspondence reviewed by Popular Information.
