Guardian story about Federal Register issue is up. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

El Capitan displays a massive American flag upside down—the traditional signal of distress or extreme emergency.

All of them...

Thanks to earthsky.org for remind us of the many ways science funding boosts our nation and our economy earthsky.org/human-world/...

Gregg is a former Marine and Forest Service ranger. He's saved the lives of hikers dangling off a cliff or going through cardiac arrest, and he's bravely fought forest fires to save small rural towns. 100% of his salary is paid by WA state. Elon fired him. Share his story.

Accepting a graduate student in lab is a long term financial commitment, which is nearly impossible to make at this point. Also watch out for overall hiring slow-downs at all levels in science: you don't need a freezing hire for this to happen, it will start to take place organically - already has.

New York Times article now up on Federal Register stuff. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/21/s... 1/n

These early career researchers are our best and brightest. We should be protecting them at all costs. 🧪 #AcademicSky

I’m beginning to sound like a broken record, but the Federal Register block is intentionally being used to stop NIH from awarding grants. They might not call it a freeze, but things are effectively frozen. We need legal action ASAP.

This is absolutely correct. Convo I had last week that is part of why I resigned: Much more senior leader: no, we still can't post FRNs. Me: Doesn't that mean we can't proceed? MMSL: correct Me: doesn't that mean we're not in compliance with the TROs? MMSL: ...um...yea, in a way...

Here are some data documenting the funding "pause" pulled from NIH Reporter. Current results (FY25) (Red) are compared with results from FY21 (first year of Biden Administration) and FY24. Note that data from Reporter lag behind release of NoAs by ~1 week. I will be tracking this going forward.

New: DOGE's spending has been secret. No longer. My colleagues have uncovered it. www.propublica.org/article/doge...

The City of Boston is leading 40+ mayors, cities, and counties in an amicus brief against the Trump Administration's drastic and illegal cuts to federal research funding—cuts that will lead to immediate job losses nationwide.

The press has a big role to play in shining light of what is going on...

The court ordered that NIH grant funding be unfrozen, so The Regime found a way around it. For NIH grants to be funded, a review panel must rank them. In order for a review panel to meet, they must post it on the Federal Register. Submissions to the Federal Register are now on hold “indefinitely”.

If the block on the Federal Register isn’t removed in the next few months, I fear a majority of labs will close within a year. This small procedural wrench has the power to kill US science indefinitely, losing an entire generation of discovery and innovation.

It was great to join @uaw4121.bsky.social at UW today to fight back against NIH cuts. Groundbreaking research that could lead to lifesaving cures will be lost if these cuts go into effect. This will hurt EVERYONE, in blue districts and red — and we’ll keep standing up to protect health care.

To all people who value science as a source of truth, cures for diseases, and hope for our climate and future, here are 2 hard truths: 1) our current research ecosystem is already strained and very fragile; 2) If it gets broken it will take a generation or longer to repair. Here’s why: 1/n

When you read about layoffs and terminations of HHS, NIH, CDC employees - remember: these are people, with families, plans, who worked for the health, safety, well-being of the American people. Now they are thrown by the wayside, by those who never cared about anything but themselves.

We have to stand up for science! Anyone who can join these rallies and believes that US science must be protected should come! @standupforscience.bsky.social

Got word that several NIH employees in a group working on cancer clinical trials got terminated via email this evening. “The [cancer research] trials will literally not be able to function without us.” Trump and Musk are killing cancer research. 🧪

The 50501 Movement has planned protests at all 50 state capitols and the U.S. Capitol on Presidents’ Day at noon. While mainstream media isn’t covering it, many YouTubers have stepped up to provide coverage.

ATTENTION (PARTICULARLY NIHers) If anyone has information about the numbers and types of folks in your institute, center, office, or whatever who were were terminated, please share them with me by DM or on Signal (jeremymberg.78). I am putting together an inventory.

What these nihilistic vandals are doing to dismantle science & medicine—generations of expertise & public service & life improving benefits—is cultural revolution level national self harm. No foreign foe could inflict such brutal damage & senseless suffering on US so fast & effectively & unresisted.

I have been talking to the media, Time, Fortune, NBC, etc., to explain how the onslaught on science and NIH will impact the health of all Americans. Everyone knows someone who has cancer, heart disease, or depression. Spread the word about how cutting science impacts all. time.com/7216299/nih-...

Read this 🧵. We have so much that we will need to fix. It is so much harder to built things than the break them.

On January 6th, 1995, my (now ex) wife and I boarded a flight from Heathrow to JFK on a one way ticket. We had two suitcases and about $900 in cash - this was everything we owned and we were moving to the US. We thought it was maybe for 2-3 years. I had visited the US once, for a conference, and

Hi NIH people! Please tell us the stories of the NIH people that got pushed out today. Great scientists? Great leaders? Ambitious and smart students? People who were just serving their country to best of their ability and working to support their family? We’d like to highlight some. Reply or DM.

We are calling for a nationwide and international boycott of all Elon Musk-related products and services. Sell your Tesla shares, avoid buying Tesla vehicles, cancel Starlink, and delete your X accounts.

Eric Adams has made a devil’s bargain with Donald Trump: he is carrying out the MAGA agenda to escape criminal charges for his own corruption. He must resign or Governor Hochul must remove him. indivisible.org/statements/i...

It’s been buried in all the news today, but every scientist in the US should pay attention to this: Mike Lauer went out on a limb for us all, sending out a memo saying institutes should start awarding grants. And it looks like Trump/Musk fired him for that. 🧪

It should be a source of profound embarrassment that a bunch of FedSoc lifers are taking a more vocal and principled stand against the corrupt Eric Adams deal than most elected Dems.

They're now cancelling key meetings at the NIH to give the green light for future cancer research

One of our supporters shared this with us—people are getting creative tonight!

Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s idea of efficiency is stopping research on curing cancer.

Surprised it isn't higher, given everything

One of the hidden gems in my lab these days is a codebase to pull down our roster from the lab website and auto-gen a figure for acknowledgements slides. We use it so often. Would this be broadly useful? LMK ... we could try to publish and support.

We're expediting sex designation change requests on birth certificates. People born in WA who want to change the sex designation on their birth certificate can do so by filing a request with us. . doh.wa.gov/DesignationC...

NoA NOTIFICATION REQUEST Re-upping this request now that NIH staff are apparently allowed to make awards. If anyone receives a NoA starting today and continuing forward, please DM me with information about the mechanism and institute or center. THANK YOU I hope to full up my DMs with good news

Biopharma companies and CEOs are keeping their heads down at their own peril. They should speak up about what’s happening to the NIH and other science agencies before it’s too late. Silence gives consent. And no one should consent to this.

BREAKING On Monday, Popular Information broke the news that the NIH had frozen virtually all grant funding in violation of 2 federal court orders On Wednesday, NIH leadership distributed a memo, acknowledging that its funding freeze was illegal and directing staff to resume issuing grants.

98% of NIH grants that should have gone out this month, didn't. Despite court orders 'unfreezing' the funds, they are frozen. Biomedical research will grind to a halt. Clinical trials will end. All for no reason: the total impact on the US budget is miniscule

So much happening in the segmentation space for bioimage analysis. These two papers that were published online today really stood out to me as noteworthy (a thread).
