Baby. The world's first computer to successfully run a program stored electronically in its memory. Made here in #Manchester. Science and Industry Museum.

I don't know who needs to know this but looks like I just got my first few citations of the year ๐Ÿค“

A highlight of the week was having the visit of Rocco Caprio, from the University of Warwick, who gave an excellent talk on "Fast convergence of the EM algorithm under a log-Sobolev inequality" ๐Ÿ‘ #Manchester Centre for (AI Fun)damentals Here is a nice memory of the talk ๐Ÿ‘‡

Today the NHS let me down. Talked to 111 who sent me to A&E who sent me to UTC who asked me to wait in a waiting room. Four and a half hours later to realise that I wasn't even on the system. And the mistake and couldn't be fixed. Was asked to come back tomorrow.

Got my first one citation this year ๐Ÿค“

A highlight of the week was having Charles Margossian from Flatiron Institute visit our Manchester Centre for (AI Fun)damentals. Excellent talk on MCMC and VI in the age of parallel computation. Here's a nice memory of the after-talk discussion ๐Ÿ˜‡ @charlesm993.bsky.social

๐Ÿ“ข Maths & Stats students of all levels from all over the world are invited to attend and/or present at the International Mathematics and Statistics Student Research Symposium (IMSSRS) 2025. A virtual free conference on Saturday, April 12th 2025. ๐Ÿ‘‰ sites.google.com/view/imssrs/...

๐Ÿ“ฃ Coming soon: Opportunities for internship, PhD, Postdoc with us here at the Manchester Centre for AI Fundamentals. Reach out to discuss topics of interest and please repost to reach candidates far and wide!

Still time to apply! This call will be open till 31.Jan.2025

Kicking off the year with a visit to the Center for AI Fundamentals at the University of Manchester ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Thank you for the invitation and the opportunity to exchange ideas!

Looking forward to the visit of Charles Margossian (@charlesm993.bsky.social) from the Flatiron Institute, who will spend a few days with us here at the Manchester Centre for AI Fundamentals.

I just calculated by hand a covariance matrix, its eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Is anyone else doing these things by hand these days. Was for a sample of 4 points in 2D space. Was an exercise in a mock exam from a previous year. Was fun! ๐Ÿค“

What an exciting year it's been! Moving to Manchester and starting my new job in the Department of Computer Science at The University of Manchester has been a great experience! In the post below I've shared highlights of 2024. Have a great 2025! ๐Ÿฅ‚๐ŸŽ† www.linkedin.com/feed/update/...

Itโ€™s time for THE charger. Today, the USB-C becomes officially the common standard for charging new mobile electronic devices in the EU. It means better-charging technology, reduced e-waste, and less fuss to find the chargers you need! #DigitalEU

For those of us who are not professional biologists, it can be daunting to hear about transcription factors, signaling pathways and non-coding RNA. But this poignant piece from @philipcball.bsky.social opened my eyes to how deep and essential these ideas truly are. nautil.us/how-life-rea...

๐Ÿ“ข Outstanding PhD opportunity! The successful candidate will be based at The University of Manchester Dept. of CS โœจ to work on learning theory and methods for novel types of distributional shifts, co-supervised with @samikaski.bsky.social โณ DL 31.Jan.2025. www.findaphd.com/phds/project...

The set of ways to learn linear algebra is convex

Planning to think about what to do next over the holidays? I am hiring postdocs to my group in Helsinki, in combinations of the following: - foundations of (prob) ML - distribution shifts - AI-assistance with computationally rational user models - applications in synthetic biology and biodesign

OK. Practical question times. How are you adjusting your research given progress in reasoning style models? Also how are you adjusting the way you work?

*PLS SHARE* Open position for an *Associate Professor* in Machine Learning at our department (@enginyeria-upf.bsky.social / @upf.edu), via the Serra Hunter programme. DEADLINE: January 13th 2025 www.upf.edu/web/personal...

I get the impression bsky is tending to fb -like feeds now. Pictures of what people are eating. Some weird pictures of skin disease (which I'd prefer not to see). I hope the bsky algo learns my preferences soon

Winter wonder

Exciting news #MathSky! Bourgainโ€™s Slice Conjecture has been proved, and the proof uses some subtle quantitative estimates on the tightness of the Entropy Power Inequality. From @gil-kalai.bsky.social's blog:

Postdoc and doctoral student positions in developing Bayesian methods! The positions are funded by Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence FCAI and there are many other topics, too, but if you specify me as the preferred supervisor then it's going to be Bayesian. fcai.fi/winter-2025-...

Huge respect to Gergo for this thread ๐Ÿ‘‡ Let me try to highlight two points: (1) Different working styles exist that can support very good work; and (2) Role models from different styles are important for the sake of the younger colleagues, so they each can find one to relate to.

Anyone know where do IEEE publications stand in terms of open access? The question is specifically regarding the paper linked below. Wondering if I can declare it as open access or not. ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/106...

Everyone should know how to do binary search and bracketing

Personally, I am against Friday the 13th superstitions. I think those kinds of beliefs would only bring you bad luck.
